An iPhone version of Rock Band has just been announced and IGN snagged some hands-on time with the rock filled title.

So, how does it play? Rock Band is a tap-based rhythm game. After selecting an instrument -- drums, lead guitar, bass, or vocal -- you dive right into a scrolling field of notes. As the notes cross the frets or drum pads, you tap. There are multi-taps and holds. To unleash banked overdrive power (you know, when you nail a series of flashing notes), you shake the device.
The tapping system works very well for the guitar and drums. The only role that feels lacking is the singer. You tap along with the notes just like the guitar. If you miss notes, the vocals just… stop. There is nothing special or inventive for this vital part of the band. I wasn't necessarily expecting a full-on karaoke-like experience (although, that would have been very cool for iPhone gamers), but something where you follow along with pitch would have been better than just copying the tap mechanic of the guitar or drums.
