  • Bad Company 2 to feature customisable vehicles

According to the official Battlefield blog, vehicles in Bad Company 2 will feature customisable upgrades. Here is what DICE had to say:
With Battlefield’s rich vehicle pedigree we simply weren’t satisfied with just providing new rides in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. We took our existing rides back to the mechanics for tuning and expanded Vehicle Combat even further by adding customization and new gameplay features.

For the first time in Battlefield history we’re adding customization to the Battlefield Vehicle Combat. In Bad Company 2 players can earn customizable vehicle upgrades that let them tune a vehicle towards their own play style. Vehicle Specializations allow players chose between Enhanced Armor, an Upgraded Weapon package, Smoke Grenades to hide, an Electronic Warfare package to locate nearby enemies, or an Optics Upgrade to zoom in on targets. These upgrades can give a vulnerable tanker the means to escape, defeat, or outlive his opponents. Finding the right Vehicle Specialization to fit each play style is crucial to success in Vehicle Combat.

While standing toe to toe and slugging it out is always a valid tactic in any skirmish, the experienced Battlefield player knows that there’s tons more depth to who wins and who loses than just accurate fire. To bring greater depth to Bad Company 2’s Vehicle Combat we turned the page back and drew inspiration from the original Battlefield 1942. Tank shells that hit armor at extreme angles will glance off doing less damage, while direct hits deal critical damage. Armor thickness also varies significantly between the front, sides, and rear of armored vehicles. A hit that front armor simply shrugs off can quickly become a problem if the same shot is delivered from behind. You’ll need to watch your back and mind your flanks to stay ahead of the competition.

Of course teamwork is the ultimate trump card to any tactic; the best tanker drivers work with their Engineers to achieve total victory in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. We’ll talk more about how Vehicles and Infantry work together to build a balanced Battlefield in the near future.

I do give them props though for trying to keep "the battlefield" fresh...

Re: Bad Company 2 to feature customisable vehicles

      First it was: customizable weapons
      Now it's: customizable vehicles

Why not just take the big leap, and make a Battlefield MMO? Isn't MMO:s "all the rage" these days? Surely DICE, being funded and supported by EA would be able to afford developing a Battlefield MMO.

Would be quite an impressive feat to have a Battlefield title where hundreds if not thousands of players can play together on the Battlefield, in an all out "PvP" setting. Where you level/advance by killing the enemy, and a loss of life requires a short duration "respawn" followed by a slowed XP increase for x minutes.

      Could become interesting...

I find this very interesting since I'm a dedicated tanker. Anything that makes driving vehicles more fun is good in my book. I am curious as to what the actual customizations entail, though.

I find it pretty funny when ppl complain about something that they haven't even tried. Makes me just laugh.

What I don't get is this part:

Why do they want props for including something that has been included in every BF game until the recent console variants?

The tank shells glancing off wasn't in every BF game. As for the hit damage, yes, but not everyone might know this, so they have to explain to those who are not familiar with BF games.

Honestly I have only seen tank shells glance off in BF2... not sure if it happened in 1942 or BFV... POE took the cake on tank hitbox modelling though...

But the differential hit damage... cmon....

Adding features is fine although I hate having to earn unlocks. Put jets and controllable warships back in!!!

Sounds similar to what COD did. However they need something to encourage more use of the vehicles, especially the 'non uber' ones.

This is a good simple way to do this. They toyed with this some in BF2 early days. As we all know some classes get bonuses to vehicles like the medic, the original plan was to do that with all classess. I have the article where Dice goes into it someplace but if I remeber correctly the AT got extra armor and Spec ops was invisible to radar.

The other thing DICE needs to do to get the vehicles back into the game is balance the point system better. Karkand was not the most popular map because it was the best but because it was a meat grinder point whore map. If other maps can offer good action and maintain consitant points then you wont see servers degrade to point whore maps. That will take a lot of work on their part with map design, the point system, and how they code their vehicles as well as inf.

Overall I am less concerned about BC2 than I am about BF3 which is what I am really interested in but chances are we will see many of these ideas fleshed out even more in BF3.

                              heh, BFBC2: pimp my tank

I hope there'll be countermeasures for all that stuff (please, pleeease, give some classes ability to hide from radar)
