DICE: We Learned Valuable Lessons from Bad Company Release

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson says they underestimated the experience of the console gamers. Take a look:
DICE, the studio behind the genre-defining Battlefield shooter franchise, has learned lessons from the release of its console title Bad Company and is looking forward to doing a better job of meeting expectations with its next release.

That's according to creative director Lars Gustavsson, who told GamesIndustry.biz that while he was "extremely pleased" with the way the game turned out, he felt that the team went into the game with a slightly wrong view of what the console shooter market was.

"I came from the PC audience before starting up here and for a long, long time - to be honest all the way up to Bad Company - I was knee-deep in PC titles, which probably coloured my opinion on what a shooter is, and what it should be," he explained.

"To me, Battlefield: Bad Company was an eye-opener, and for a very long time I think the PC audience was seen as the hardcore, the most competitive and dedicated audience. Maybe at one time that was partially true, but now we definitely see a fanatic shooter audience on console.

"I think one of our biggest mistakes with Battlefield: Bad Company for example was that when we started making it, laying out the plans, the view on the gamer was that it's a console audience, and we need to treat them a bit more gently, since they're less experienced...

"Well, when we shipped it - it was quite a long project - the audience had grown, matured, played more online... so they knew what a shooter on a console should be like, what to expect.

"So I think in some areas, as lead designer on that project, I feel that we could have done a better job of meeting those expectations, even though I was extremely pleased with the project."<!--more-->

Gustavsson, who has been with DICE since the very first Battlefield game was created, added that the feedback has influenced the way the team is approaching future titles.

"It definitely does," he said. "I was lead designer on Battlefield 2 for example and on that one we picked out the elements that we felt were missing from Battlefield 1942. And then in 2142 we tried to make it easier to find friends to go out and play online, and so on.

"Now, looking at our console audience, we just had this discussion that we should more or less handle them on equal terms. A lot of PC players like me have become old farts, with children at home, and it's harder to find the time to sit in front of the PC. Therefore, when they find a good shooter title they'll expect more or less the same possibilities when they fight it out in a console game as they would in a Battlefield PC title.

"It still means that what we've always had as a mantra but never really succeeded in delivering on is that we've always had quite a high entry level into the franchise - it can be overwhelming to come into, especially the early games where we didn't have any proper matchmaking. But that's something we're working with, regardless of whether it's PC or console, we just want to give people a more gentle way into the franchise."

Gustavsson is one of the speakers at this year's Nordic Game conference, taking place in Malmo next week, and the full interview is body text available now.

Guess that means we PC Battlefield players are no longer hard core, that's fine Dice we hard core PC Battlefield players have given up hope for a true BF3.

Keep pandering to the console community Dice I'm sure you make more money off the console anyways since you only have to develop for one type of hardware.

    So sad

Im really surprised DICE thought this way before bad company..

      Oh well, FTW now

It a funny thing really... To think that the hardware that runs a game has anything to do with a players attitude towards the gameplay. Or what would make it fun..

If its pick up and play... that really doesnt have anything to do with in game features..

Pickup and play means how quickly and easily can you be ingame..
      Thats a console

Oh wait.. let me build this system before I can play some game..

I dont think he said anything about PC gamers not being hard core but he said that consoletards turned out to be slightly smarter than he realised (I.E not very)

Though I was hoping that he said the lesson he learned was "NEVER WORK ON CONSOLES AGAIN."

As soon as DICE even mentions consoles all the bottom lips stick out and start trembling. I don't care how many platforms games come out on as long as it doesn't mean that I end up with a port on my PC. Just cos a title comes out as a 'PC exclusive' does not mean it will automatically be good, and the same goes for a multiplatform title, doesn't mean it will be bad. If DICE can pay for the development of a PC title by selling millions of copies to the console market I'm happy.

Stop worrying about what everyone else is getting!

The sooner we accept the fact that there is NO PC only-hardcore BF coming in next 10 years(or ever), the sooner we can move on with life, beat nostalgia (ive played every battlefield since bf1942 released) and find another titles.

The only thing that keeps battlefield alive is nostalgia. Everyone, even I will buy it just because its battlefield. Dice is beating dead horse with bf series. Building games with no content (srsly 3 vehicles per side, and 10 statics on three recycled maps is not really anything, I am(was) a modder and I could make 6 vehicles into bf2 during 4 weeks alone). And building games for dumbheads. Almost every game out there is converted into dumbed down crap. (any old WOW players around ?) Really I wish they fall down like a burning satelite.

Well, they seem to be saying "NO PC only-hardcore BF coming", I died a little inside when I read that interview, especially if Lars is creative director of Battlefield.

Who cares. If it makes others happy and doesn't do anything to us, let them do it.

Besides, the "EA screwed us" attitude of the community is unwarranted. You didn't have to buy from them, and they didn't totally screw you. Just look around at the flourishing (SP?) mods out there - many people play PR (the one mod I do) and are satisfied - EA laid the groundwork for that.

Remember EA are a Publishing company, NOT a developer. Who knows how many ways they are poking DICE, eww :shakehead:

Anyway, you can't comment on EA screwing anybody till you played Tiger Woods
