well i don't think people who work on the patches are the same people who made the game - quality wise. at least from what i've seen for 2142, you can kinda tell that the people working on the patches aren't very good because they're not good at patching and they break things often. why don't the people made the game in the first place come back and finish the job instead of moving on with the "i'm done working on that" attitude? one would really think they outsource to devry's.

Sure it's sound business practice for executives, but unfortunately it's terrible for the video game industry, and a big reason why we haven't really seen any decent games at all lately (consider how over hyped and overvalued both Halo 3 and GTA IV were for 2008).
They have BF Heroes and 1943 to reach a wide range, let's hope they can pull off an epic 1943. I hope BF3 isn't dumbed down any further than 2142 - that was my first BF game and I had no problems starting out.

Before video games were a multi-billion dollar industry, the industry was fueled by creative people who HAD to rely on innovation just to even get noticed, let alone sell their games. Now we have these monopolistic publishers like EA who seem to absorb any and everything that has value to the video game community. EA, directed by their corporate wigs with a bottom line only mentality, provide funding to developers on the basis that the game will POTENTIALLY appeal to the broadest base of customers.
EA basically has only two things going for it - sports and DICE.

Anyone else remember the good ol' days where gameplay was valued over graphics and piracy was mostly friends burning CDs for each other. Okay, so I'm only 16, but I mostly played my dad's games from the 90s lol.

This is most evident with EA/Dice based on their actions. The years between BF1942 and BF2 were considered golden years for DICE with the PC community, sales were high, the community was massive, and Battlefield was cemented as one of the classic online shooters in history. Aside from BF2 (which at many points was very annoying with patches/bugs), after the EA acquisition, we saw nothing but mediocre spin-off games (Vietnam, countless expansions/booster packs, etc...). To add insult to us PC gamers, they started to direct the BF franchise towards the console crowd, which ALL PC gamers know only results in a much more diluted and dumbed down product.
Again, I'd love to disagree about the ports, but it's true. Frontlines for example. Wasn't DICE bought by EA after Vietnam though?

The EA/Dice apologists will claim that EA/Dice do just as good as any other developer/publisher does. That's not the point at all, the point is that Dice was once a company based on innovation and a strong connection to a loyal community, in which that community made them famous in the industry. Consider THOSE times to the ones we live in now, where mediocrity is all that matters, and people are patted on the back not for the quality of their product, but the quantity of the quarterly revenue.
Good point about the DICE vs. old DICE vs. DICE vs. other companies argument. I hadn't really thought about that before. I wish I had started playing Battlefield back in 1942.
That's my input for this thread, sorry if you were too lazy to read it.
You don't have to apologize, it's their loss if they skip your post.

This new map .... sometimes i think they should play their game sometimes -.-
There is no need to test this thing, but apperently they think they have to.
Anyways if you see me on a server playing the new map, i'll be PLA playing AT standing with 7 or more homies on the waterside of the map and waiting for you - have fun USMC.

The franchise dies hard since BF2 and releasing the modkiller himself: ranked servers

They decided to rip clans and communitys off to get more money out of it, and because they wanted to suit more the average player.

BF2 is already a game with monthly fees like WoW, just payed by clans, not the average player. I always wonder why noone complains about this fact.

Very much of our problems now are based on that decision.
Just a few keywords: rarely played mods, PID Spoofing, Stats-Padding, Timeservers

Those problems wouldn't be there if there were no ranking, noone would complain about knife&pistol servers and stuff, more people would play custom maps, the whole community would be wide more open to modding.

The past news and interviews shows me that the weather is getting darker and darker.

Re: Operation Blue Pearl is the New BF2/BF2142 Map

i've never seen a thread here full of so many people that get it.

          yes yes yes!

Yes the support for (and from) the community built this franchise. DICE used to be a beacon of community support and transparency. I can't tell you how often i heard of them working with the mod teams back in the 42 days. We all kind of miss that.

They gave us hope with aberdeen, philipenes, coral see, and so on - all free. Then they took the hope away with euro forces and armored fury. They gave us hope by allowing Desert Combat to get people interested in mods. They took it away by giving us ranked servers (while it appeals to some gamers - it's not really a selling point like they think).

I'm absolutely glad that (someday) DICE is giving us a patch (changlist?) I'm not hearing that the patch addresses the complaints of the community though. It seems like a maintenance patch.

The information regarding the limitations of the map seem reasonable enough and reminds me of the "open lines of communication" we had in the past.

The new map? Great! Criticism? Why I'm glad you asked:

Is it just me - or is that a flooded out karkand? The layout looks just like karkand except the allies must've blown a dam upriver and the chinese are on duty that day. I wonder if the devs checked what the community wanted by just checking their server browser and thought "hey they like karkand".

Karkand 24/7 is for people that don't know about call of duty 4. There I said it. Even basrahs edge in DC had a frikin transport chopper (lets face it they are harmless in both games). I like Karkand every once in a while. But no vehicle karkand with a dam commander just doesn't feel like bf to me. Where's that flame suit?

          I'm done ranting.

It's good to see some info come out of DICE and the fact that we are so critical of them at this stage is because they have done so well in the past. It just seems like this patch/map is too little and too late in light of what we've been accustomed to since bf2 was released.

Are you really going console on us? *pouts*

EDIT: As I haven't actually played the map, perhaps it is too early to hold judgment. While the flag layout is much like karkand, it could still be well designed. My rant was more directed at the patch that carries this map. And Karkand. Stupid Karkand.

Yet again Dice goes with the "If there is no bread, eat cakes" attitude...

Everything has been said a thousand times before,
Too bad that EA dosent understand that BF2 wins by default, as soon as a worthy competitor will hit the shelves, the BF series will no longer be profitable,
              and its curtains for dice.

Mods have ranking systems. But loads of players prefer vanilla, and loads of people love a ranking system. For example, i gain joy out of improving, being able to measure my improvement, and gloat about it brings a lot of joy to me. Its sort of like adding a story line, you work towards the end.

It is obvious ranks are a major reason for keeping players to play the game. How many people get 5 stars on Cod4, only to move onto another game?

So does every BF game, so does Cod4. So does your beloved battlefield 2 mods. Why is this relevant to anything I do not understand? There are servers that EA provide also.

Stat padders go to that length because rank is important to them. So do some infantry players, play solidly in tank for 100hours just to get the star ranks. It is reasonable to say that this evidence alone shows that ranks are a major reason for people playing the game. Which is good. Despite the baggage that comes with it.

Totally off topic post. The irrelevant content is also incorrect. So ignorant lol.

Karkand is the most popular map in BF2. Not only that its the most popular "city map". Why not use something that already works???

No its not. Theres a massive difference between karkand infantry and cod4.
Again showing your lack of knowledge. I wonder why you bother to "contribute". If you can call it that.

Too little too late you say??? Okay so why is everyone complaining its not released. Is that the sound of "too little too late"? Maybe too little too late for you lol. Please do not download the patch when its out. Do not play the game, it will be one less noob to slaughter lol.

I'm finally at a place where I can play the game at ultra high settings... perhaps this "cull distance" was a big deal in 2005 but I'm ready to turn up the heat with the inexpensive gaming gear available these days.

IMO, TroyBob doesn't deserve the lack of love expressed above.

every BF Game? Show me some ranked servers for 1942 or bfv. Show me a CoD4 ranked server where people have to pay money for. Show me a bf2 mod server without dedicated server files, even if it has a ranked system. The ranked server of CoD4 is for free, everyone can set up a cod4 ranked server, on his own clanserver, without having to pay a ranked hoster for that.

If you were in a clan and played BF2 directly after release you would know that offical EA servers were very rare and it took hours for you and your friends to get on the same server and again hours to get in the same team. You almost had to rent a ranked server OR play alone with your m8s on your empty unranked bf2 server, because most people didn't want to play unranked.

You blame the ranking system for the mods doing badly. You then go on to say that mods use the very same ranking system. Perhaps then this suggests that maybe people prefer vanilla bf2 to mods because it appeals them more. With this in mind, surly then its the mods fault for not producing the content which attracts the majority of players.

Sorry I have limited knowledge of other games. However many companies profit from unrank servers. Cod4 has a rank system and has free servers. Why are you not picking wholes at cod4 rank servers? This is hipocritical and shows that your argument has nothing to do with servers being ranked, just that they are paid for by the players. Again this is a thread about a patch. ITS NOT RELEVENT!!

This is not true. All the clan servers are paid for by I'd imagine no less than 90% of the players on bf2. It is not impossible to find a server with your friends, even if you have not paid for the server yourself. Again not relevent to anything.

I said it is a "major reason" for people playing the game. Do you know what this means? This means it contributes a good amount towards keeping players. It does not mean there are no other reasons.

Karkand is very popular because of close range fighting. Having a fog at like 100m similar to karkand is a good thing for encouraging close range infantry combat. Even if its to do with pc "rigs", this will only help make this map a good PLA infantry map.

Are you kidding? Even if mods use their own ranking system, they still won't be official ranks, which is a huge incentive for people to play ranked vBF2.

I doubt Activision/IW makes money off of CoD4 servers, CoD4 and BF ranking systems are not the same. CoD does not have central stat servers, whereas BF does.

its gonna be impossible to cross the water into the chinese territory
I wonder how the 2142 version will play out since it's frozen and you cross in walkers and APCs.

But how exactly is US supposed to counter 32 Chinese anti-tanks and snipers?
