gCOPS - New World Order of the Gaming World

Okay, I believe in banning cheaters, hackers, etc etc etc, but this to me is going too far. Over at BASHandSLASH, they are reporting that:
Imagine you have set yourself up a gaming server and you have implemented some rules that govern your server's gaming style. There are resources available to help you run your server and keep the gaming experience clean via systems such as PunkBuster and PBBans to name a few.

These only catch cheaters and if players are caught, it results in a ban...a global GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) ban which renders the cheater's game useless for online play.

But what about the mouthy troublemaker who comes in the server and disses you and all the players on your server? Sure you can ban them, but this requires you to be on the ball and on the server 24-7. There's no automated way to filter out trouble-makers.

However, what if you were able to get intel on each player as they got into your server and you could know right away whether the player was predisposed to being an e-punk?

This describes a new era in adminning, the era of gCOPS.

gCOPS is a system that PST*Joker and PST*MeatPuppet have devised that allows game administrators to tag players in real time for offenses that pertain to their own server's gaming style.
As well, an opt-in global tagging system is available in order to share a server's tagged players with other servers partaking in the global system with similar gaming styles.

Now, if it was just for their server, no prob with me. You go into a server, you follow their rules, no matter how lame, or you leave. Sounds good, I agree. But to tag them globally as a "troublemaker", NEIN! So what about the gamers who go into a clan's server i.e. me and many others, who completely own a clan, and not one arrogant word is typed at all. YET, because their entire clan was getting owned by said player, they now put a tag on this player so that when he goes to another server, they are going to think that he's a troublemaker when in all reality, he/she's just a better player than those "e-punks" themselves that had administrator's rights!?!

Apparently, the gaming world wants a "New World Order", not I. Yes, there are people out there that can ruin a server for everyone else, but to have a global system such as this is not logical in my opinion. If it's just for their own server, I repeat, I have no problem with that. What makes the server admins capable of judging a gamer's character? It is a rare case when an "a**hat" comes in and destroys a server, so are YOU willing to give up your freedoms as a gamer and put them into the hands of server admins? Granted, I'm sure just as with the gamers themselves, most of the server admins are respectable people, they pay for their server, etc, I understand this, I have been in that boat. But I have also known people who get instantly power hungry as soon as you let them be a server admin. I would get furious over fellow clan mates who would kick people simply because they were getting owned by them...wow, simply wow.

SO, if this system goes through, I only hope that server admins out there learn to count to 10 and breathe before making the decision to globally tag a person as an "e-punk".

I would gladly like for PST*Joker or PST*MeatPuppet to post here if they would like to elaborate on if there will be any restrictions on the server admins themselves, or if server admins will become "Gaming Server World Rulers" without anyone to stop them?

This subject is addressed later on in the post at the Bash and Slash forums. However, with all that Joker and Meatpuppet have done to promote the COD series, I don't think their intentions are to make a program to be the "Big Brother" of COD. I guess ultimately the players will decide if this is acceptable or not by either avoiding or boycotting servers that chose to run this program. On the other side of the coin, being a server admin has become such a time consuming and often annoying chore (screenshots, warnings, bans, checking server logs etc. etc. etc.) that I think this type of program would be welcomed by some admins out of sheer frustration.

Surely this is just open to abuse from corrupt server admins. They aren't all angels...

I'm all for catching cheaters any way possible but this is a bit much. There have been many a night where I'll play the game after have a few too many and get kicked or banned from a server because I'm a smart assed drunk. I'm usually a good little soldier but after a few too many beers and/or Scotches I tend to get a bit mouthy especially if the server has rules that I take issue with or they take issue with me.

Yeah, I dont know about this. I havent read the full article, but in order to prevent abuse there would need to be logging and a lot of proof of such things going on. Like Maxell said, it takes a lot of time and effort to catch cheaters and run a clean server. With bad admins out there, there will need to be some checks and balance to it.

I dont think Roamer should be banned because he had a rough night and a few too many

Its a game people. Cheating is one thing, being an *** another.

Dont like it at all...Its the same crap as the reputation on the XBOX Live: Own the wrong looser and they diss you.

But i agree on the trash talk: Youre on the server playing, its public and that means you should behave yourself and dont hide behind the anonyminity ( wrong spell?, not my language english sry) internet offers and trashspam the chatt or the voiceprogram.

                lol, nice sarcasm sir.

Yeah, I'm not going to get political, but there are a of things in the world where people will tell you things will be better with more control from some 'higher ups' who 'know what they're doing', but it's not worth giving up my freedom for it.

That's why I believe that if servers wanted to use this for their own personal servers, THIS WOULD BE GREAT! You don't like someone, fine, you pay for your server, do as you please. But if it's their time of the month and you piss them off, and then they globally tag you, you'll instantly have a bad rep at other places.

I know that when I've been on a tactical server before, people whine and hate the rules. I don't like them either; however, the server is clearly labeled as such, and I respect their rules for that server, IF, they follow them also. I like the 'tactical' clans that demand no running, but they'll run and say it's okay if you're under fire. You're in a war (virtual one), you're almost always under fire. But, I continue to follow their rules and when you do, and own them, it feels that much sweeter. It's their playground, they do have the right to make their rules.

I think this tool should be released, but the global part of it should be left out.

Ah come on guys, Punkbuster does essentially the same thing, global PB ban, I've seen it before, can't join any servers, all this does is tag the player, hell, maybe Joker and Meat will make it so a player can loose their trouble maker tag if enough admins vote for them. It's all still early. Not every server has to use this btw, only the admins that want clean and mature servers running will use it.

True, but there is banning for a cheat/hack, and then there is subjective bans which is what this program would allow. That = not good.

Wow this is a stupid idea. Just ban people off your server if you don't want them there. This sounds waaaayy too overboard. I agree with you completely JoMaMaz

I concur as well. There's pretty much unanimous agreement that actual cheaters should be banned globally. But "lame/jerk" behaviour is very subjective.

Someone could be having a bad day, or purposely doing it on one particular server to prove a point, or be completely innocent and the target of admins/clans who hate losing or are overly anal.

I get real sick and tired of the weak, whiny video game culture that is slowly taking over. It seems like every server now has a no swearing rule, because they don't have any parenting skills and let their kids play M Rated games.

                            Parents,
Learn how to be a parent, or don't be one. Don't make me or anyone else have to be responsible for what your child hears or sees.

Weak and whiny because we don't want people yelling swears over VOIP all the time? If you can't take the no swearing rule, you're the one who's immature.
