    CoD:WaW Audio Tech

CoD: Hub has put up a new article concerning the audio tech that was used in CoD:WaW. It is definitely a good read for any audiophiles out there or for others who want to understand more about the audio world. Check out a snippet below:
One of the biggest new engine enhancements we made for Call of Duty: World at War was to the Audio engine. When it came to audio engine modification, our Audio Director, Brian Tuey, led the charge, which is why I asked him to share his thoughts about what’s new in Call of Duty: World at War from an audio perspective. I personally found it extremely informative, and hope it explains some of our innovations a bit more clearly!

    Occlusion
So what IS occlusion? It's the concept that if a sound has to travel through an object, its going to sound different than if the sound plays with a clear line of sight. If you imagine someone yelling at you and you slam the door in their face, their voice would sound significantly more muffled through the closed door than the open door.

You can find the rest of the article hear. (Spelled that way on purpose )

I've always liked the sound in this game, I know many people complained about it being too quiet, however to me it was closer to the audio experience I have with Battlefield 2 and raven shield. Sure loud boistrious ear piercing sounds get the blood flowing, however with out audio occlusion l couldn't tell if the shot I heard was from a room beside me or just outside of that room.

Perhaps it's having a discrete sound card that helpt bring that to it's full potential more, however with that in play, it made the engine feel a lot more modern (ironicly).

Look, I do not care how great and advanced the engine is. The guns in this game still sound like crap, fix that.

With my Xonar and Z-2300's, it makes a fairly loud bang!

No CoD game has ever had good "booming" weapons. They've always sounded like pea shooters imo and that worked great for CoD4 since they're modern weapons. Yes, there are some decent boomers, but it's not always realistic either to have thunder from every weapon lol. However, it is quite fun. MoH: Airborne, GREAT weapon sounds! You can literally 'feel' the weapons. But, obviously weapon sounds don't make or break a game as CoD:WaW and MoH: Airborne have proven lol.

If the weapons sounds are too soft/quiet for you, that's one thing, but being specific about that point is better than saying "they sound like crap". That kind of thing is just like the vague ranting we've seen on the official forums, which doesn't help.

Yeah, well I stand by what I said, the game sounds like crap. A friend put it best, all the guns sound like .22s, very weak. Really pulls you out of the game.
