Funcom Closes Over Half of the Age of Conan Servers

Another killing blow was delivered to the dead and dying Age of Conan MMO today, when it was announced that Funcom would be closing over half of the realms available.

At present, Age of Conan has 49 servers world-wide, but will see this number fall to just 18 in the near future.
The reduction is more dramatic in North America and the Oceanic regions, where 24 servers are being merged into just six. In the US, only one player-versus-player server and two player-versus-environment servers will remain, with each combining the populations of six or seven existing servers.

In Europe, 12 servers will remain, due to the need to provide a variety of server types in each of four languages. English-language European servers are being cut from 13 to four.

Following the successful test merger of two Oceanic servers last week, Funcom expects to do the rest in two job lots - US and European - this week.
The merging of the realms is due to the dwindling numbers of the MMO since its launch last year.

GameIndustry.biz notes that subscriber fees are the only source of income for Funcom right now. This may indicate that Age of Conan may be kept alive until the developer's next title, another MMO entitled The Secret World, is released some time next year.

another remake the Tabula Rasa fiasco? im kind of happy that this is happening, weeds out the complete failures of MMOs. I've heard Terrible things about Tabula rasa, and If you listened to the #29 podcast, They think the same for AoC
