The deplorable status of the economy strikes again as it was announced today that Electronic Arts is shutting down its Black Box studio. Black Box, as you may recall, was the studio responsible for the Need for Speed and Skate titles. Development teams at Black Box will relocate to a nearby EA studio at Burnaby in British Columbia.

In addition to this closure, EA has announced plans to close at least eight other studios and publishing locations. The details of these particular closures have not yet been revealed.
Quite possibly the worst news to come from all of this is the fact that nearly 10% of EA's global workforce, or 1,000 employees, will be laid off. The closing of the game studios and reduction of workforces will be completed by March 31, 2009.
