Sony has confirmed that trophy support will be mandatory starting in January of 2009. Any games released in 2009 and beyond must have trophy support included at the time of the game's release.
This should make a number of trophy hungry fans happy. As it stands, titles being released now either already have trophy support included, are getting trophy support added as part of a patch, or have no plans to add trophy support at all.

A rep for Sony Computer Entertainment America told Edge in an e-mail, "Yes, this is correct for titles submitted after January 1. Obviously many teams have already started to incorporate trophies and even include support for older titles."
