Woman In Jail After Murdering Her Virtual Ex

Everyone loves "feel good" stories, right? Girl meets boy in game, girl weds boy (also in game), girl and boy divorce suddenly (still in game), girl hacks into boy's account to virtually murder the boy's avatar. Really, who hasn't heard that heart warming story a thousand times by now?

A 43 year old Japanese woman is now under arrest after hacking into her virtual ex-husband's account and killing off his virtual persona. The scene of the crime was the ever popular Maple Story, the online RPG phenomenon. She is being held on charges of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data.

If formally charged, the woman could face up to five years in prison or a fine of $5,000.
"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.

The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married, and killed the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his beloved online avatar was dead.

The woman was arrested Wednesday and was taken across the country, traveling 620 miles from her home in southern Miyazaki to be detained in Sappporo, where the man lives, the official said.
Never forget that the Internet is very serious business.
