Gaming Industry Booming in Spite of Looming Recession

Reuters reports that despite the recession that we're all on the brink of entering, the market for video games is staying strong. How strong is the gaming industry in 2008? "Strong" to the tune of $22 billion.

Experts say during economic downturns, consumers are likely to continue treating themselves to video games. The industry is on track to earn $22 billion or more for 2008, according to research firm NPD.

The Holiday season is fast approaching with a number of blockbuster titles still to come. For as much as some people play games, it is really no wonder that parents are more than willing to fork over the $50 to $60 for a new game that will keep their kids entertained for hours, if not days.

Aye, it's easier to buy one or two games and end up playing them (and staying in) therefore saving money because you're not out spending money each day...

I'm guessing sales for DVDs or just people watching TV programmes will go up too... maybe more people at Cinema too, possibly less in Clubs, Pubs will probably stay about the same... that's what I think o.0

Nice to see games dont suffer, (compared to the Aussie dollar).

It's hard to go wrong with the entertainment value of games, especially if multiplayer is mostly what you buy a game for...

Movie in a theater: say $10 for 2 hrs of entertainment = $5/hr
          Movie rental: say $5 for 2 hrs = $2.5/hr
Medium sized novel: say $10 for 10 hrs = $1/hr

COD4: say $50 for a minimum of 50 hrs (average time to rank up to lvl 55 in MP) entertainment = $1/hr. That's being very conservative. If you play for 100 hrs (4 total days) or more, then it goes down to $0.50/hr or less.

Not to mention that video games help you forget that you just lost thousands in the stock market
