IGN: World at War Multiplayer Hands-on

The guys over at IGN have also posted up a hands-on preview today with the multiplayer portion of Call of Duty: World at War. They also have posted up a ton of new screens and videos. Check it out:
Oh, and did I forget to mention that a latter part of the mission had us sticking the end of the new M2 Flamethrower into a bunker a flaming the Japanese soldiers inside? Yeah, it was cool. Or was it hot?

Not to be outdone, the competitive multiplayer has also made a few additions to the tried and true formula that worked so well in COD4. You can still level up your character and unlock new perks and you can still earn prestige several times over (though this time you get a reward for doing so), but there are a few important differences. First of all, perks now include the ability to sprint while crawling, climb trees faster, play dead, and swim faster among others.

its too bad the noob in the videos is a console run and gun tool, i would have liked to see the garand, bar, and other weapons other than the tommy which everyone in the videos was using. the maps look cool, but the dogs are totally unnecessary and a horrible idea. also, the swearing at the end game score sheet is uncalled for.

Re: IGN: World at War Multiplayer Hands-on

First, nice to see screenshots of multi-player...hopefully that means that the demo/beta is indeed getting close.

Second, interesting that these guys once again seem to be mentioning some of the perks that were "leaked" early on, but then were not mentioned in the list given more recently by Playstation Universe (a list which seemed more likely than the first one). Will people really be climbing trees so much that a "faster" perk will be needed? Or passing through that much water? The "playing dead" perk seems like it could be as annoying as Martyrdom was. :|:

As always, we'll have to wait until the demo or even full game comes out, but some of these perks just don't seem like they'd be worth it. I hope the Playstation Universe list is actually the correct one.

        ..

NOTE: there's 4 different MP deathmatch vids on that page, so be sure to watch them all! :)

Welcome to online gaming... Players most of the time pick automatics in MP games.

The dogs are a stupid idea. But the swearing at the end, well, the game is rated M. Unless you meant it sounded odd.

I think it sounded out of place. I expect swearing in video games to amplify fear or anger, but this was kind of random.

The dogs dont instantly kill, unlike the helis, so thats not bad.

Did anyone notice Kiefer Southerlands (sp) voice in #4?

I wondered if there would be a 4th perk slot for vehicles. I wasnt sure if it was going to be mixed with the other spots.

HA, I just finished watching the video and it now asks for my age. Thats funny.

As for the cussing, I dont think that was an end of the game thing but a random outburst.

I agree. From the vids, it looks like they chase you, but there's a gap between dogs, instead of all in a pack really close together. It looks like you can indeed pick them off with some fancy shooting before they get to you...so they are vulnerable. Unlike the "cheap" "aimbot"-ness of how the chopper operated, speed is probably their biggest weapon.

Maybe my opinion will change after being mercilessly mauled to death by them but from what I've seen, I think the dogs will be ok. One scary thing...from the vids, I don't think I saw the dogs showing up on the mini-map radar. Stealth dogs! Eeek!

Yeah, if they do that cussing at the end of each round, that will get annoying. It does seem like it was 'forced' to say it.

The rest looks cool though. I like that we have a chance to take down the dogs unlike the heli practically. They said you can't knife them...wtf? Why not?

Overall, another good preview with vids. Hopefully, I can get my desktop pc fixed before the demo comes out, doubt it, failed. lol.

Re: IGN: World at War Multiplayer Hands-on

These are pretty much the first MP vids that have been released, from magazine reviewers getting a sneak peek. Might see some more in the coming days/weeks...

...however, I wouldn't be surprised if the actual demo/beta isn't too far off. Some folks on the official forums are claiming to be able to see some people (early "friends and family", similar to what they did with COD4) already accessing it on the 360. If that's true, the rest of us should see it quite soon.

And that wouldn't be surprising about the demo. From what I originally heard, it would be Oct 11th for the beta release. Do not hold me to it if it doesn't come out, but that is what I thought I heard before.

Well, Oct 11 (this weekend) is one month before release. If they do actually release a "beta" (as opposed to a "demo") then that means they will be taking gameplay feedback/collecting stats, and possibly making some changes (although most will probably be XBL-side)...if so, they need to do that quite quickly to have enough time.

I think this weekend is also the free trial of Crysis Wars, so who knows...COD:WW might try to rain on their parade.

I do not mind the addition of the dogs and so on - I welcome new content. I still feel, however, it is very important to have the option to remove these things while keeping your server ranked! Sorry to go on about it, but UAV changes an online match 10x.

                              Looks good though.
