Blizzard Bests Bot Developers in Court

Blizzard was awarded $6 million in damages from the makers of a World of Warcraft bot after a court ruled in their favor back in July. It was just announced today how much would be rewarded in damages to Blizzard.
Blizzard embarked on the case against MDY claiming that the World of Warcraft Glider software produced by the small company infringed its copyright.

The Glider software lets Warcraft players automate many of the repetitive steps the game involves.
Blizzard was seeking a larger payment, but was denied a larger sum by the judge. The company had wanted the final figure to be double, even triple the final $6 million figure that it ended up being.
In July US District Court Judge David Campbell ruled that the MMOGlider, as the software is now known, broke the terms of the license that players agree to when they play World of Warcraft (WoW).

The Glider software is the creation of MDY founder Michael Donnelly who is thought to have sold more than 100,000 copies of the $25 (£14) program.

It proved popular with many WoW players as it helped them automate the many repetitive tasks, such as killing monsters and scavenging loot, required to turn low level characters into more powerful ones.
The final chapter of this story will come in January of 2009 when another court case is held to determine if MDY broke a Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or if Michael Donnelly will have to pay anything out of his own pocket.

I can see why Blizzard are upset and want to stop him but 6 million is a bit harsh if he would have to pay out of his own pocket...

Think about it this way the guy probably didn't think he was going to be caught. Well now he has and now he has to pay.

Im not a WOW player, but I dont get this article. Blizzard stomped on some guy that made a program to do minial tasks in the game?

Is that right? Did the program do something else? Was there already a Blizzard program?

To me, and I dont fully understand whats going on here, that would be like Battlefield stomping out Ventrillo because they provide VOIP in game as well or better than Battlefield.

Or is it more then that? I would hope it is.

What the company did was against the EULA as WoW is supposed to be played by humans and everything should be done manually (part of the experience) instead of automated.

It is like having a your computer play as you in Battlefield with a custom CaptainCrunch ai (programmed to move, shoot, chat, drive, etc. like you would do if you where playing) so it seems like you are a real person playing but instead your sitting back watching your favorite movie either on your TV while your PC plays Battlefield 2 for you, dominating in the server in a human like way.

Oh I see. I could understrand the upset of that. Kinda like having an aim bot for FPS except it does the other chores.

              Thanks Heart.
