A recent report states that Sony may simply use the Cell processor for the PlayStation 4. The report also notes that Sony is actively seeking input from developers on the matter.
Use of the Cell would decrease production costs significantly for the future system, something that's plagued the PS3's development for quite some time now.
Shacknews states that should Sony stick with the Cell, they may use an enhanced version of the upcoming 45nm chip that is making its way to PS3 systems shortly, perhaps adding more cores to the chip. This smaller chip size reduces heat output and lowers power consumption. Also, the switch from XDR RAM to the more conventional DDR RAM will further decrease costs and keep the game developers happy.
With a reported $3 billion already sunk into the production of the PlayStation 3, this move would be a smart one on Sony's part.
