    Google to Acquire Valve?

According to Marketing Director and Public Relations figure Doug Lombardi with Valve, the rumors are "complete fabrication."

The Inquirer reported earlier today that according to "Well placed sources," Google was considering purchasing Valve for their content distribution system, specifically Steam, causing large amounts of speculation and concern on the internet for the future of Steam and Valve. Further analysis suggested Google was in the process of searching for a secure method for copyrighted content distribution, but we can now safely say these rumors are, for the moment, false.

People are questioning The Inquirer and MTV as sources? Shocking.

It would be interesting. Google's development backbone and pure money behind Valve and Steam? Sure, we would have to live with Contextual adds, but, Google is a great open-source resource platform, and, if they get Valve to open steam up for Open Source distribution...that would actually be a good thing

It would not necessarily be a bad move. Think of it this way. Battlefield Heroes will be using advertising to fund the game and it's development. However, adverts only appear outside the game, on the website and on loading screens, there is nothing actually in the game.

If this had been the case with Steam games, it could have provided a good revenue stream which would enable Valve and the smaller developers games they publish, to invest in more creative ideas. Also, it could also extend the lifetime of a game by enabling a developer to employee more people to work on older projects. A good example of this is where EA/DICE's joint venture with Intel led to the release of Highway Tampa map and possibly more in the upcoming patch.

Don't always jump to conclusions. A business venture such as this can create a great deal of positive externalities and synergy, which in turn can act favourably for the end customer. Obviously, it has to be carried out well, but it might not be a bad thing should it ever happen.

Google like to spend, unlike most other corporates.
