Ubisoft Sues Over Assassin's Creed Leak

Ubisoft has filled suit against Optical Experts Manufacturing over what they believe to be a leak of Assassin's Creed for the PC before it was released. Check it out:
Ubisoft's hit action game Assassin's Creed was released on the PC in April, but in appropriately Altair-like fashion, a pirated version of the game sneaked onto the Internet two months earlier. Obviously unhappy with the leak, the publisher has decided to take the matter to court and make someone pay.

Last month, Ubisoft filed suit against Charlotte, North Carolina-based Optical Experts Manufacturing, the company it had contracted to reproduce copies of the game disc. The publisher alleges that "an extraordinary breach of trust and gross negligence" on the part of OEM allowed one of the company's employees to take a copy of the game home early and post it on the Internet in late February, six weeks before the game arrived in stores.

The publisher alleges that OEM had agreed to abide by--and thereafter ignored--an array of security procedures that could have prevented the leak. Ubisoft further alleges that OEM admitted to not following through on its security commitments and causing the leak. One such security procedure was to prevent copies of the game from ever leaving OEM's premises. Read More...

I'm not normally "for" big business suing smaller companies, but man did OEM screw up. They deserve this suit against them. Just a shame that it was perhaps one employee that ruined it for everyone.

Although people usually think of disgruntled programmers or testers leaking materials, most of the leaks out there usually occur during the manufacturing process. So many discs being printed so quickly, that it's often tempting for some folks to try some shenanigans. A few years back, EA went after some schmuck that was a link in their manufacturing/distribution chain, who had been leaking materials for profit for several years.

Good on Ubi to do this, even if only to set precedent for future incidents.

Ouch, breaking street dates like that is a big issue at the minute particularly on PC, hopefully this will discourage an opportunist in the future.

Yeah, its a shame, but Ubi is doing the right thing. I hope it was worth it to the pirate to hurt his company and job just to get a game out that will be out a few months later.

Heck, who am I kidding, he is probably a minimum wage worker that has already moved on to some burger place.

They should be taken down as well.
