Re: Call of Duty (5): World at War Details Revealed

Here's the whole CVG link: http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=190547

The first details of Call of Duty: World at War have been revealed, plucked straight from the pages of Xbox 360: The Official Magazine (#35), which is dropping through subscribers' letterboxes right now.

The fifth game in the CoD series, which is being developed by CoD3 studio Treyarch, ditches the number subtitle and expectedly returns to WWII - but the developer stresses it's not the same theatre we've seen a million times before.

It all takes place in the Pacific theatre (and partially in Russia's advance into Berlin) says OXM, which all in all was a much grittier and darker conflict that the one in muddy Belgium fields.

Treyarch has had a full extra year over CoD3's development to make World at War - and it's using the excellent CoD4 engine, which is plenty of reason to be excited.

"This is a scarier Call of Duty than we've ever seen," Treyarch head Mark Lamir says in the mag.

To help simulate the Japanese's different style of warfare, Treyarch has completely re-tinkered the enemy AI in World at War. Instead of taking cover and flanking in traditional European battle strategies, the Japanese hide in trees, sneak through the overgrowth and scrabble, katana in hand in violent suicide attacks.

"We figured out early that the Imperial Japanese fought in a different way that was full of suspense," creative lead Rich Farrelly tells OXM. "From that point we started to skew the game in that direction."

Excitingly, for the first time in Call of Duty's campaign 4-player co-op is supported over Xbox Live - and it supports meta game perks as in CoD4's excellent online mode.

You'll find loads more details and first screens in issue 35, in the shops Friday June 13 (but in subscribers' hands now).

      ..

Despite what some people here are saying, WWII is still a huge genre/market, especially with the demographic that first made MOH and COD popular. If it's done well, it'll be successful. There's still plenty of room for other conflicts like Vietnam and the Cold War (which I would love to see eventually) in the future.

The argument of "too many" WWII games is nonsense...there are just as many sci-fi shooters, or magic-based RPGs, etc. Airborne was a hugely anticipated shooter, but flopped because of the buggy nature of the game - not the WWII setting.

As long as the market will support it, a genre will continue to be made.

Actually I take back what i said before. With the new GFX engine on this WWII game, might not be a bad thing. All i ask is you dont revolve the whole story around the american campaign.

I don't know about you guys, but this looks REALLY cool.

Imagine fending off a crapload of Japanese soldiers on a Banzai charge? Or even... Anyone see the war scenes in "Flags of Our Fathers", something like that.

I'm really anticipating this after reading that article, and the fact that its running on the current CoD4 engine makes it even better.

I would LOVE a cold war shooter though, anyone here read Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy?

Re: Call of Duty (5): World at War Details Revealed

Thank you Whiskey for your post!

There are still people playing WWII shooters and other players who want more WWII action. For those wanting Vietnam games, some of those have already been made also! I know this comes back to the fact that a lot of BF2 and CSS players came over to the CoD franchise b/c of CoD4, but realize where this series has been for CoD, CoDUO, CoD2, and the CoDs on the consoles...WWII! CoD4 is the ONLY game in the series NOT to be in WWII.

MoHPA and MoHAirborne were both good sp games and highly anticipated, but as Whiskey said, it got screwed by bugs (my wording, not his ) I'd like to see the Pacific Theater done correctly and it could be fun. Plus, with the whole burning people's skin and hanging PoW's, it sounds like this will be rated M, thank goodness. WWII, along with other wars, are not nice and MoH is always trying to keep the teen rating to get more sales. However, it takes away from the war feeling just like in previous CoDs where a puff of smoke comes out of a guy when you shoot him lol.

They did play it safe by still having a European Theater with this game. Not bad to have a safe fall instead of going purely Pacific. When I read they had 2 years for this game instead of 11 months, and that specific teams are for each version, this game has a chance. Especially since it will be on a good engine, the CoD4 engine. So it won't befall the same problems that MoH had with a horrible engine.

And I also agree with Whiskey about the genres as I have said before too. Tons of fantasy, modern, sci-fi shooters, and yet people, mainly reviewers always say "WWII is played out, there are too many WWII shooters, blah blah blah." Well let the numerous sales of WWII games do the debating back for that.

I actually wasn't even interested in CoD5 when I first heard about it, but after this article, I'm actually really excited about the game! CoDUO was the best CoD imo and it wasn't made by IW, it was made by Grey Matter (the guys who made Wolf: ET).

Imperial Japs jumping me with swords from trees, This game isn't an FPS, it's my worst nightmare.

But, I'm in no worries that i'll kill them all with my shotgun just like in MOH:PA.

I think these features will make many people happy as well:

There will be co-op for the first time in a Call of Duty. Also there will be vehicles and squad-based elements to the multiplayer.
Vehicles aren't for everyone (I'm not a big fan), but most people seem to like the idea of squads, and console folks especially wanted co-op in COD4, so this should please them.

i was gonna suggest a similar idea. like they could work on the repercussions of that mission etc.

also another setting that could work, but may be too early to focus on it at the moment could be what used to be Yugoslavia and delve into the conflicts with the surrounding nations that took place during the best part of the 90's.

or just come up with a original idea like Massive Entertainment did with World in Conflict.

Yeah, they haven't confirmed Co-op for other platforms yet, but I think it would be cool.

Also, kudos to them for not just sticking with the engine, but enhancing it to better suit their needs and advancing the gaming experience. I remember playing Red Faction a looong time ago and thinking how cool it was to have a destructible environment. Things feel more interactive and real. Also, it's going to be intense to hear the screams and see the melting faces of people when using the flamethrower. :omg: I look forward to playing this game and trying out their improvements and innovations! Plus, it will hopefully be a gritty, hardcore WWII experience as they describe compared to some of these 'soft' versions of other games. I think that alone could get some more people interested again in experiencing WWII gameage.
