    Battlefield Heroes Announced!

We've been sent news from EA & DICE today announcing the next Battlefield game, Battlefield Heroes. Take a look:
    Attention Heroes!

Today we announce Battlefield Heroes™, an all-new Play 4 Free cartoon-style shooter that will bring classic Battlefield gameplay to an all new audience and setting. It’s fun cartoon-style graphics and gameplay caters to players of all skill levels. It is easy to pick up and play but with robust character customization and a deep online meta-game, gamers can spend hours building up their characters and conquering the world.

“There’s something here for all types of players -- be it our core Battlefield fans or casual gamers. With the new online model, we will continually add new content to keep the game fresh and keep players engaged, while integrating player feedback in real time. As a game developer, it is such a cool new way to make games.” says Ben Cousins, Senior Producer for Battlefield Heroes.

Battlefield Heroes is being developed by DICE in the Stockholm studio and will be EA’s first title that is offered completely for free. It will be released for the PC as a free download at www.battlefield-heroes.com in summer 2008.

Check out Games for Window’s upcoming March issue (on sale February 12) for exclusive details on the game!

A Q&A about the game has been released to community sites. For the latest news always check out www.battlefield.com.

    1. What’s Battlefield Heroes?
Battlefield Heroes is a new cartoon-style Battlefield game that’s completely free to play. This ‘Play 4 Free’ type of game is new to EA so we’re excited to be leading the charge! It’s going to be available this summer and we’ve worked hard to make the game appeal to both our core fans as well as people new to Battlefield. It’s easy for anyone to pick up and play because of the intuitive controls, fun cartoon art style, and community features, but at the same time there’s real depth and strategy for people like us who are passionate about gaming.

    2. Is this BF3?
No, Battlefield Heroes is not Battlefield 3. Battlefield Heroes is one of many Battlefield games in development by DICE, including Battlefield Bad Company for PS3 and Xbox 360. We have not made any announcements regarding Battlefield 3.

    3. How’s this different than any other game out there?
It’s mainly different because it’s FREE! But this is also a new take on Battlefield games. Battlefield Heroes combines the classic sandbox gameplay of the Battlefield series, but we are also adding loads of new stuff - a fun, over-the-top setting and art style, simpler controls and interface, and a deep character development and customization system. Because it is download for free and ‘Play 4 Free’, it really changes how we approach game development – we can add new content to the game at any time, we can respond to the community’s feedback with tweaks and changes and we can make the game YOU want to play.

Stay tuned for more news on this newly announced title!

            That's why its free.

But FREE is a great word!!!

Also, the fact that it isn't BF3 is good, we haven't been let down, and anyone who's played TF2 will know just how good this game could really be

Knowing that Dice is working on this bullshiat instead of BF3 is a massive letdown for me.

And remember, free isn't quite free. According to the article you linked to, the game will be supported by ads and micropayments, ensuring that those who pay the most will have the best weapons. Awesome.

I can't wait to dress up my soldier with a fuzzy pink coat and matching mittens for just $3.95.

My prediction, based on dice's track record lately and the fact that they are working on this, bad company, and probably bf3 means this game will suck, hard.

Not to mention, a dumbed down(!) version of bf? Great, another thing we need for all the console tards out there who wanna be 1337 h4x0rs on their dells aswell.

                  Funky. :p

Battlefield games has always been the awesomeness so I have no doubt this is going to be great. I hope the new more cartoonish style fits :)

Although I am rather curious about what they mean with "micropayments" and what you are paying for then.

That's good, cause then all noobs can keep playing the free game while we others can play BF3 without people not knowing how to shoot.

Micropayments are very small amounts of money been given, so.. like $1 for .. lets say a new uniform, or $2 for a new weapon skin etc.

Its like upgrades to your character for small cash.

Hopefully they don't make this upgrades available to weapon statistics and availability.

Let's see what CKMC has to say.

Ah. Hope they don't turn it into paying a monthly fee like WoW though.

How can you dumb down BF2? Do they mean they're just re-releasing 1942 with new graphics. That's what it sounds like. Less features, less game play.

And nothing is free from EA. Micropayments? I can see my soldier running to war naked with a sharpened piece of kiwi fruit.

What a fail this is going to be.

This picture sums it up pretty good, the sign is BF3 and this game is the camera...

Great. Another game in development by DICE. You don't need a 'Guarantee to Fail' sticker on this game to know this will suck. They are working on Bf3, bad company, and this at the same time. Of course, they are going to rush them out in succession to leech money off, all with the **** quality. Look at Bf2142. And cartoon style? Since Tf2 is so popular, they're going to try to copy it. Micropayments? Like elxx said, I am just WAITING to get some new pink & sky blue tiger stripe uniforms made of titanium, with a recoilless machine gun firing .50 cal bullets, along with a panda hat for $19.95! Of course, the people who don't spend money on it are going to get pea shooters that do 1HP each, and start out with one bullet in the chamber, and stark naked. OF COURSE IT'S GOING TO BE FAIR AND EVEN!

One more thing. Dumbed down? Yay, even MORE idiots are going to join and ruin the game!

Just give the game a chance before you start flaming it, seriously.

I seriously doubt that the game is going to be like that, and if it does you don't have to play it. It's free.

                              Calm down.
