It depends. If the ads are mandatory even in mods, then I could see mods as a benefit for DICE/EA since they will increase the lifespan of the game at no additional cost => more viewed ads.

On the other hand mods will likely not support micro payments, so if more people move from the core game to the mods EA will lose "micro-sales"

      I found this at http://kotaku.com/347144/ea-reveals-...lefield-heroes
Battlefield Heroes is EA's first title that is offered completely for free, and features a built-in matchmaking system to ensure that players of equal skill are paired together for fair play.
I love the idea of a skill-matching system.

With the new online model, we will continually add new content to keep the game fresh and keep players engaged, while integrating player feedback in real time.
Sounds great too, if they keep the promise. But I guess it will be in their own best interest.

Has anyone played a game called navyfeilds its from a korean company and it is free to play but they give you the option of buying diffrent ships, weapons and also crew. I think its the best example.

Also....no game nor any mod can provide deeper teamwork.....do I need to repeat that statement???? No mod or game can provide deeper teamwork...EVER. It's all about who you play with. PR didn't invent teamwork...clans did. And any top tier competitive BF clan would whip the snot out of any dedicated PR clan...in PR...because of teamwork.
First, in BF vanilla you can actually play alone, there is no actual NEED to be in a squad. In PR your abilitys are crippled without beeing in squad. For example you cant use some vehicles, vepons etc. In some servers you will be kicked for not beeing in one. So the game design is the big issue when it comes to teamwork.

Secondly, in BF2V I have never had SL in pub server who leads hes squad over VOIP. Maybe there is, but its very rare. In other hand its very rare to have squad in PR who dont communicate over VOIP.

I never sayd that PR invented the teamwork. They just brought it ingame with gamedesign. I have never expirinaced so much TW when playing other mods. I dont like some things either in this mod, but its the closest mod to ideal game, that i want to play.

I hope it will be good explains delay to patch bf2142 a bit better.

Is anyone else a bit astounded about just how secret this was kept. Usually these things are leaked months before they appear in any magazine but this time the first whiff is an offical article in a magazine. wow they must have hired some proper security staff at EA and DiCE for a change.

It also encourages me that patch application and ongoing tweaking will be better. The incentive to patch bf2142 and bf2 just isn't there. Most people who join forums and see the whinging do so after they have bought a game unless they are hardcore gamers but the vast majority of the customers of EA wont be in clans etc so they will not know EA are pants at patching. If they want me to keep spending my hard earned micro pennies they better fix problems quickly and efficently and not need me to shut down the game to go download an update from fileplanet at 40kbs.

Just get it workign and release it. I dont mind adverts even in a game i just tune them out. Blimey release a whole level and call it the Macdonalds Frag Fest and have it take place in a town with spawns in a macdonalds i dont care as long as it is free.

New vehicles to use in game get fully modeled real world cars and make the manufacturers pay. It would be fun to be driving a converted volvo with a machine gun turret on top.

Dont think they will do this as it is ww2 but it wouldn't bother me if they did.

                "copying"?
They would have to change the BF model a lot to make it anything like TF2. Cell shading is just a visual style that has been done lots of times before, TF2 didn't even start out that way.

And since we have zero info about the content of the game, I think it is a bit a of a stretch to proclaim it a copy of TF2.
Is TF2 a copy of XIII?

My guess is that being a community bod or developer isn't that easy. So many people to please, but, rest assured sensible and constructive feedback is taken on board.

That's why i try and emphasise the need for constructive criticism over down right flaming, and there are a few "old school/regular", members who should take that on board (not mentioning any names, but i'm sure you know who you are).

Criticism, whether about game technicalities, sales or communication is always helpful, but remember, where there is millions of pounds/dollars involved, they cannot change everything at your beck and call.

Releasing a free game is smart, whether or not you think it's a copy. If EA/DICE believe they can take a genre, that may or may not have already been explored, then give them a chance. Improving on what is already a good platform cannot be a bad thing, and if it all goes tits up, don't buy it and they'll learn from their mistakes.

The people working on these games are human, and thus, like you and I, they make mistakes. Accept it, and let them move onto something else.

You mention fixing BF2. I cannot think of a worse idea at this moment in time. It would be flogging a dead horse.

Whilst the concept of the game and it's actual execution was very good (and let player numbers be proof of that), i'm sure EA/DICE would be the first to admit some things could have been done better or changed. Obviously, this won't be done on a public forum, but i'm sure talking to the devs they would agree.

By going back and working on an older game, they are simply taking away possible resources from BF3, and i have seen a lot of posts here attacking them for making Heroes and not concentrating on BF3. So, really, your being kind of hypocritical.

I hope you can see it from my perspective. Maybe it's the years of studying business and IT has left me as a sympathiser to the companies, but, in all honesty, they have a very difficult job!

Yes, indeed their job is difficult, they do have to move on to new projects, which I am glad they do so we all have something new to look forward too.

They do read all comments and take it in (see the DICE Community Managers on the forums, that's what they do. EA is also everywhere but there presence will not be as obvious.), then prioritize on what is urgent and what is not. Everything cannot make it into the next patch, or there are something that will never make it into a patch due to the complexity of the problem or that fixing one thing might break another.

I am guessing with the experience they have under their belt they will build from their mistakes and every new Battlefield title will be better then the one before. Also with DICE trying new things, keeps interest in what they are going to do next. As no one saw this coming, who knows what they are going to do for Battlefield 3.

Bingo! I was waiting for someone to bring up NF. Players who don't pay can still compete with those that do, in fact to a decent degree. It just takes longer to get to the same place or it takes in-game cash to get the premium items.

The problem with that comparison is that Navyfield is a MMO and has ingame currency which then leads to the ingame cash to real cash conversion rate that seems to spring up in most MMO titles. The problem is, you won't have that here.

But, to the DICE staff, I have a suggestion. Give us the ability to gift these microitems to other players through the game itself (without having to give your account password to allow someone to buy something for you). This way, clan leaders can use left-over donations to essentially buy clan uniforms for the members or something of the same sort, and you cut down the number of scams which accompany things such as this. I can already see people trying to exploit the, "Get free microupgrades, just give me your password" stuff.

You know what were fun "cartoon" games were? Armymen! Those games had a lot of fun gameplay and fun to them. Its been years since I played them, but they were really good. Looked plasticy and realistic at the same time.

If DICE wants to make this game, go for it. I will try it out for myself and decide from there. If I listened to what everyone else thought, I would have owned QW, UT3, and Crysis. MAN that would have been bad (for me, those that love those games, good for you).

I always wanted an Army Men! FPS, the went RTS instead. Make it fun and give it FLAME THROWERS. Those are awesome in a cartoon style environment.

You really should be playing TF2

I do Which is one of the reasons I want flame throwers in this one

The thing that disappointed me in TF2 was the limit in weapons and character changes. Its still an awesome and fun game to play, but give me some flash in the pan variety

Now, if I have to pay for the bling, I guess it depends what it does, if anything.

go say that to the realism fanboys, its like speaking to rocks... many good mods out there based on realism are ruined because of their fanboyish communities.

i saw a post before about the upgrades being only for looks and not weapons, i really like that :)
