But really, if that press release was from DiCE...they f**ked up right out the gate by putting a time line on it. It is very amateurish to actually have a public target date. Blizzard does not do it. They certainly learned that a decade ago. Id started the whole "when it is done" statement with Quake I. Did Valve say early in the several years it was working on Half-Life2 that it was going to be out next year...just in time for Xmas? No. No one says ANYTHING like that. But DiCE. They did it with BF2. They went public right off the bat showing their work-in-progress videos, with Colin standing there chew gum into the microphone saying "yep...only a few months away...oh, we are still working of the explosion effects" (yeah, that is a paraphrase).

But once they put a time line on it...what happened? They boxed themselves into having to get it out. With a Senor Management Team at EA looking over their shoulders going "you said first quarter, our shareholders are expecting earnings from your release now...get it done!" And then what happens, because they did not have the spine to say in the first place that "we want to break every record in the book, we want to release the mother of all FPS/Sandbox games and will be played for 5 years...it will make Counter Strike and its following look like the pre-school recital!" And it looked like it was almost there! I am not sure if they just did not have the budgeting to keep developing, had to beat competing games that were about to dropship to the shelves, or to satisfy the demands of the community, but it was just not a finished product.

So I say..."Aim High"..."Shoot for the F**king Moon!!!!!" Make the game the biggest God Damn experience anyone could possibly imagine. Make it so you can't even put a label on it. "Is it a Flight Sim? No wait...it is a First Person Shooter...no wait...it, it, it...WTF is it...oh yeah! It is Battlefield, a game that rewrote book shooter immersion. A game where Tribes failed and indoors Quake could not follow for several years."

Right now, DiCE should take their queue form some epic moments in history that reshaped the landscape. Like America in the Sixties...Proud about it's victory in WWII, then getting complacent in the years after, it got soft...but then when the Reds were showing America's weakness, Kennedy stood up and said, "we are going to the Moon!"

Go big! Because DiCE is soft right now. There is a lot of bad blood out there with them and competition in the market pace now. And yeah, gamers can be fickled, but it only takes a couple bad reviews of people saying "well, BF3 is just like BF2" and it will sink like EuroForces did. But if the reviews say "forget what you used to feel about DiCE/EA! They are rewriting history and once again everyone is going to have to play catch-up! Buy this game or go back to playing Pac-man"

I know that is a long, passionate post. But I really love their product and they show great talent. It just disappoints me to see them not go the distance. Yeah, this is all based on just a "mysterious rumor PDF", but their legacy tells the bigger picture.

Certainly they are going to change their formula. Because it goes back to wait I said a few pages ago. "Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me." I am keeping that in my head as Crysis and Farcry show up. And with Valve dropping some titles right now...I am leery of giving EA any money.
get some money and buy DICE, i like your way of thinking :p

The only thing that would revolutionize the industry would be to have an "enterable" RTS.

What if you could play World in Conflict and instead of just being able to control units...you could actually enter a unit under your control?

So lets say that you have control over an armor column....suddenly you see that your opponent is kicking your *** because he has some sort of tactical advantage....you go FPS and jump into one of the pieces of armor under your control and go rambo on his ***! This gives you the distinct ability to counter the enemy in a very unique way instead of just allowing the AI of the game to do the thinking.

Now of course this would require massive amounts of balancing and whatnot but I think it's the future of FPS because most FPS games today are too similar and they mostly lack the overall strategic gameplay that RTS games offer.

Really, WIC is just BF2 on an RTS engine. why not make it both?

You just described a nearly 10-year-old game from Microsoft named "Urban Assault":

        Cool game I thought.

Although you would need a beast of a computer to run something like that.

Funny you mention it. My wife said yesterday I should start a game company and just get the venture capital to start the project. She was like "it only takes one person with a vision to change the world." Hell, it might just be easier to buy the Half-life engine and convert it to needs of the title...especially since Valve is strongly embracing symmetrical processing.

The unfortunate side of me starting a software company is that it will take time to get it off the ground before it is ready to take on the gaming market. Especially a market that is dominated so heavily buy a couple distributors...maybe the FTC needs to look into that also.

I mentioned that a while back, I think it would be a good idea to have civilians, make the game more tactical where you cant just spam nades, arty, tank shells etc etc
some of you might think you could pad to hell and back by killing a civy and reviving them over and over, but theyd have to make them respawnable but not revivable and you should get some sort of punishment for killing them not just lose points but maybe get thrown in the brig for something like 1/4th of the remaining time left in the map.

Anyways the whole idea of BF3 sounds, how should I say it? repetitive maybe?

Another idea I was thinking of, make actual missions

on maps with a carrier (actual moving drivable carrier operated by the commander) there could be a mission for both teams, take Dragon Valley for instance, PLA mission would be to sink the ship and in order to do that they would have to board the ship (actually be able to go thru it) and destroy a certain number of things like the engine room, bridge room and control room then that would immobilize the carrier and you could sink it with a good arty strike, you couldnt drop arty on it if it is moving. Then the USMC mission could be something like destroy the jet hangers the refinery (actually blow the big holding tanks) and the power station. You figure that it would be more realistic compared to raising and lowering a flag. But still have control points to secure, you'd have to control x amount of points before you could board the ship as PLA or enter the refinery as US. I know that this idea is pretty vague and there is a LOT of room for improvement but its something to go on. It would be sorta like Assault mod for UT, but instead of one team defending and the other attacking all the time, make it so both teams attack and defend every round.

So, they sell you 8 maps with only 40 players to start.

But how many expansions (read mods) are they going to sell you to up their profits?

oh great, stats are even more "important" it seems with this?

Stat tracking isn't all bad, it can be useful. But forcing people to pay a lot more for a server than it's worth, just so peolpe will play to get their "awards" "medals" "ribbons" is retarded.

Don't they realize if they made the game mod friendly, not force "ultra restricted and idiotic" ranking systems, they'd have a LOT more copies sold?

There are very few of the hardcore players around here anymore. Mostly just little tards that love consoles and want all their games to be dumbed down and get "fake super special awards that mean nothing".

I agree with booster packs and expansion packs being a complete and utter money sucking ********!

They are seriously turning me off of the BF series.

Besides that I also hate having to have a CD into the drive to play the game, it's a constant battle with **** cracks and mini images, it's annoying!
