You know, I think they were trying to think "bigger and better" when they were working on BF2. And the game was great in several regards.
But really, if that press release was from DiCE...they f**ked up right out the gate by putting a time line on it. It is very amateurish to actually have a public target date. Blizzard does not do it. They certainly learned that a decade ago. Id started the whole "when it is done" statement with Quake I. Did Valve say early in the several years it was working on Half-Life2 that it was going to be out next year...just in time for Xmas? No. No one says ANYTHING like that. But DiCE. They did it with BF2. They went public right off the bat showing their work-in-progress videos, with Colin standing there chew gum into the microphone saying "yep...only a few months away...oh, we are still working of the explosion effects" (yeah, that is a paraphrase).
But once they put a time line on it...what happened? They boxed themselves into having to get it out. With a Senor Management Team at EA looking over their shoulders going "you said first quarter, our shareholders are expecting earnings from your release now...get it done!" And then what happens, because they did not have the spine to say in the first place that "we want to break every record in the book, we want to release the mother of all FPS/Sandbox games and will be played for 5 years...it will make Counter Strike and its following look like the pre-school recital!" And it looked like it was almost there! I am not sure if they just did not have the budgeting to keep developing, had to beat competing games that were about to dropship to the shelves, or to satisfy the demands of the community, but it was just not a finished product.
So I say..."Aim High"..."Shoot for the F**king Moon!!!!!" Make the game the biggest God Damn experience anyone could possibly imagine. Make it so you can't even put a label on it. "Is it a Flight Sim? No wait...it is a First Person Shooter...no wait...it, it, it...WTF is it...oh yeah! It is Battlefield, a game that rewrote book shooter immersion. A game where Tribes failed and indoors Quake could not follow for several years."
Right now, DiCE should take their queue form some epic moments in history that reshaped the landscape. Like America in the Sixties...Proud about it's victory in WWII, then getting complacent in the years after, it got soft...but then when the Reds were showing America's weakness, Kennedy stood up and said, "we are going to the Moon!"
Go big! Because DiCE is soft right now. There is a lot of bad blood out there with them and competition in the market pace now. And yeah, gamers can be fickled, but it only takes a couple bad reviews of people saying "well, BF3 is just like BF2" and it will sink like EuroForces did. But if the reviews say "forget what you used to feel about DiCE/EA! They are rewriting history and once again everyone is going to have to play catch-up! Buy this game or go back to playing Pac-man"
I know that is a long, passionate post. But I really love their product and they show great talent. It just disappoints me to see them not go the distance. Yeah, this is all based on just a "mysterious rumor PDF", but their legacy tells the bigger picture.
Certainly they are going to change their formula. Because it goes back to wait I said a few pages ago. "Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me." I am keeping that in my head as Crysis and Farcry show up. And with Valve dropping some titles right now...I am leery of giving EA any money.
