    Right guys?

Beta testing eh? sounds good. This time they made a huge step in the right direction to let the public actually test it, if you have a team of testers directly in your office with high end comps you will get a lot of the bugs but the majorety with the net problems will be missed

I like the idea of community beta testing; that should help insure a decent patch that hopefully fixes things rather than break them. If BF2 is going to make a comeback, it's gotta be now or never.

I'm not really big on the rumored "Infantry Only" mode; that is not what BF2 is about IMO, but whatever I guess, it's not like I'll be forced to play it. A new map sounds great, but really, I'm hoping to hell this patch is more about fixing issues than introducing anything new.

On a final note, HUGE plus about the nerfing of that stupid vehicle-drop feature. It's bad enough it's even in the game; at least they are going to restrict it to some degree.

This is good news :) The only thing I can see that may not be god is the name of the new map. Road to Jalalabad? That's just bad, but I can get it

Dudes, do you really think seriously they have not betatested the other patches?, c'mon, they did, but I suspect the bugs don't arise in closed tests, that's the reason they want to stress it now in an open betatest, with the same conditions of public playing and all the ranking mambo jambo.

I like bunnies. Why are there still no bunnies? Extra content should signify the arrival of bunnies.

Oh, and we've heard this story before, the only difference between then and now is the open beta. What I don't get, most companies offer BETA testing for products BEFORE their release, not 5+ patches into it.

Am I the only one that sees and understands this?

                PEACE

Jalalabad...I'm never gonna be able to say that without laughing...same with "cartillery"

I'll be interested to see how the open beta works, I thought that's what they have done from the start but maybe they will be more open to the more negative feedback in the patches and see what the community really wants. I'll bite and be sure to say something about widescreen

                    • Crash Fix: We have located and fixed a crash connected to 1.3.

I dont care about anything else - just give us this fix in hotfix form now!!! lol
I'm not sure whether they are referring to the crash on hitting join button or the server crash bug. I dont even care about the join button bug - The server crash bug has become intolerable to say the least. To let any game like this go on with this sort of error when it is a multiplayer game is incredible. Dice - if it isn't too much to ask please give us the fix you have located for this server crash issue. At least then some of us here in Aus can have a decent game every so often

                    rant complete.

                      Re: Community Update - 6/16/06

I have mixed feeleings about this news update from EA/DICE.

Pos - restoring the unlocks etc for the MODS that are out there, and other issues.

Neg - Time line to actually produce a patch to fix the stuff broken in the last patch. Will the other KNOWN issues be addressed also? Prolly not.
                      - Open Beta Test..... ok say in an ideal BF2 community working in 'partnership' with the Game Dev's could work. My question with this is the Community will submit a list of both bugs and wants - how much of the feedback provided by the folks who bought and play BF2 will actually be addressed and incorporated. Also thinking about the idea of - bug/wants list X time taken by Dev's to decide what will/won't be progressed for the patch = oh it's time for BF2142 to be released ?

This is incredible - how naive is the community
Open betas don't achieve results, they are publicity stunts
Closed betas like those for BF2s patches HAVE found all the bugs.

The problem is DICE release the patches anyway
You cannot seriously believe that the average joe is going to be able to help DICE
                              - how is he going to identify exactly the source of a bug
                              - report it correctly

All this will result in is pages of topics in the forums about bugs found - pages that won't and can't all be read by DICE
Closed Beta testing works - the problem is that DICE publish acceptable standard patches instead of striving for high quality.
Too many of you are being swept up in the flattery and ego-massaging by DICE offering an open beta of a patch - stop and think for just 5 seconds
                              This cannot work

                                Re: Community Update - 6/16/06

Now, I'm not standing up for EA/DICE. I love their games... or at least I love the mods for BF1942 and BF2, but I do think that they consistently shaft their community with these "patches". However, open betas can and do work. Maybe they won't work here, I don't know. If open betas didn't work, then publishers/developers who spend huge amounts of time and money developing their MMOGs, wouldn't open beta test them. Granted, the scale is completely different, but the amount of money involved for them in keeping their servers running and their people paid is astronomical compared to the amount EA/DICE would spend open beta testing their pseudo-MMOG.

Beyond that, do you really have any basis for your points, Skeletor? How do you know that the closed betas that they've run have found all the bugs? Also, DICE's previous patches have not been "acceptable standard patches". They've introduced at least one useless or at least irritating feature, and have introduced a myriad of bugs.

I don't think DICE creating an open beta for their next patch is causing anyone to be "swept up in the flattery and ego-massaging by DICE offering an open beta of a patch". Why would we be? Do you think it strokes our collective vanity to be given the option of participating without pay in DICE's QA?

Christ, sorry for the ramblin'. And don't take it personal, you hear?
