oh yeah, dunno why theyd freak over voip.

as long as the swearing 11 year olds arent too loud, and for me voip is pretty quiet and hard to hear relative to the artillery, tanks going by, shooting etc, so my parents dont hear anything.

how old are you? 15? not that bad here heh.

You might want to point out that atleast you are getting some social contact out of your hobby. Consitering the number of TV adicted youths out there that have a totally passive and isolationist (in other words, brainwashing) habbit, gaming atleast exposes you to real people.

Are they ultra-conservitive? Ie, Bush voters or hardcore christians?

never heard of a legion of tv addicted kids... i thought counterstrike had em all!

unfortunately, i dont consider online contact social.... social is out there with somebody.

so smoking pot might be with the bottom of the barrel, but online contact is another rung lower. not social contact, just something that makes games more fun really.

of course its nice to play with friends from reality, and i know a few nice guys just from the internet, but i wouldnt consider em friends...

Ah. I've seen some very odd behaviour in the parents of a couple Hindi friends... specificly, finding the fact that I'm a long-haired male to be obsene!

Grin 'n bare it, is my suggestion. I think everyone's parents occastionally get a little wiggy for reasons you'll not understand until you have a kid of your own and catch yourself doing the same oddness.

Try to let 'em know you respect their experience, but also point out the value of your chosen form of entertainment. Don't bother arguing, 'cause you won't win. :p

Yeah well, I was just kind of ****ed at this is all. Wont be able to play on TacticalGAmers much anymore, but I still will. Just keep the VOIP down, or tell em that its bots talking. Yeah, I better not argue. Worsen my chances probably, probably take my vid card or something. Or RAM. I think the latter would hurt more just because of the no RAM beep that Windows gives.
And this is kind of a ritual for me whenever I am responding to bear:

Have you tried asking what it is about Voip that bothers them? Is it that they find it irritating that you're yappin away constantly, or is it that they think you shouldn't be talking to strangers?

Try asking 'em upfront about it, but be respectful. The more rational you are about posing the question, the more likely they are to be willing to work through it with you.

Parenting is a pain in the arse job that doesn't get a whole lotta thanks. No one every understands this until later in life.

It's funny that nearly every post I read with Donkey Kong in the avatar I end up hovering my mouse over the "QUOTE" button to reply to you. Within seconds, I give a big sigh and move on.

Anyhoo, there's nothing wrong with online contact. Only the socially inept create a standard of what is socially 'normal' and 'abnormal'. In fact, a good friend of mine is in a relationship of 2 years (and couldn't be more happy) with a woman that he met on the net.

I use instant messaging to keep in touch with people that I've only met once all over the country. That way, when I drop in their town I'll have somewhere to crash and chill.

The net is slowly becoming a socially acceptable place... a place that even the people with personality disorders that belittle everyone and everything for things they were belittled for are starting to accept as a 'normal' gathering place.

                        On topic...

My parents have always been very relaxed and gave me the freedom I needed to experiment (which ultimately led me down a better path btw). If your parents are wigging out over the VOIP, they're probably reacting to the countless news articles, CNN reports and small talk with the friends that made the internet look like a place filled with child molesters and criminals.

The best way to get what you want is to act like an adult and explain your point of view. If your parents still give you problems, it's better to suck it up and add that in your box of "things i'll do when I move out". They pay rent, they make rules :)

ah wargimp, you like many others whom overestimate the internet, have absolutely no clue about reality....

you see wargimp, you SAYING that he is more open minded and better educated, has absolutely nothing to do with reality.

open minded? sure! i dont pretend to be some bleeding heart liberal.

better spoken? better educated? find a better damn word, or your command of the language here is worse than mine!

neither of those are the case. he might appear to speak more rationally and or grammatically correct, but neither are the case.

For instance,if i actually gave a sh*t what internet forum dwellers thought, i would probably put in the time to capitalize letters, speak with more maturity as well as coherence and illustrate the command of the language that i possess.

unfortunately for you wargimp, i DONT give a **** what any of you think, and as such, will continue to write posts in 2 seconds, caring nothing for their political correctness, nor their composition.

really though spetsnaz, i dont agree with your position on the internet.

i would agree that it socially is becoming slowly more acceptable, but VERY slowly, and it certainly aint now.

the fact that your friend is happy with a woman he met on the net concludes very little.... most people would probably NOT be happy with people they meet on the net.

in fact, i very much doubt that meeting a spouse on the net is what socially able people do...... could happen rarely, but certainly not normal.

yes, i could be friendly, and pretend to care about other members like everyone else here does, but whats the point?

i could be everyones friend here, but i see no benefits.... do you?

Well people that have personality disorders like CareBears are not really welcome, I dont think. Yeah, they dont want me talking to strangers is all. Yeah, and CareBear, this is just the way I type. After so many papers, your fingers just get in a sync for typing.

                              Such as me!!? :|:

I actually do have social anxiety disorder, however, which basically makes a person very shy/nervous/anxious in any social situations what-so-ever.

Because of it, I honestly don't have many friends at all, and to be truthfully honest with you, I've still not even had a girlfriend yet..... but hey, I'm only 16 as of now so maybe that will work out eventually.

The internet is definitely my "homeland," and the only place that I can speak my mind without feeling nervous/strange while doing so.
