    You just have to work around it. Make a nose dive if you don't have to shed much height. If you are ontop of your target but to high sping yourself down. If you are way to high and just want to get lower then turn the helo upside down.

    It helps if you lower the throttle in a nose dive but you have to rev up early if you want normal control.

      it's so novel when someone takes a physics class and learns neat things like this...

      ...and then applies them incorrectly just to try and sound smart. :/ have you even thought about the thrust the engine is applying in an upward direction? weight has a HUGE bearing on this equation as you will have to calculate the gravitational pull on the mass of the helicopter in a downward direction versus the upward thrust of the engines. the difference will have an important impact on the rate of descent, far more than wind resistance. be very careful when you claim "weight has NO bearing on rate of descent." your thoughts are founded in the laws of physics, yes. but your understanding is remiss of the overall system.

      so in closing, it's neat to know that the prototypical bowling ball and marble (what... not a feather?) both fall at the same rate in a vacuum, and while it may make jimtool sound more like a tool than a jim, it has absolutely no bearing on this discussion.

      all the stupid internet arguing above aside, fact is who the f knows why dice did it this way. whatever. suffice it to say, JMLufkins, you are right in what you suggest, you just need to work on your approaches. rarely should you just bottom the collective and slowly float down while level. work on thinking a few steps ahead of the situation and manuevering such that you either "slide into position" as machstem suggests or any other solution you can come up with to get you where you need to be when you need to be there!

        A marble and a bowling ball are similar objects, as are the two aircraft. That's why I didn't use a feather.
        Yes, you're right about the upward thrust of the rotors, but cutting the throttle altogether should take that out of the picture. DICE must have decided that the attack helicopter rotors will maintain more thrust than the transports when the throttle is turned all the way down. When you turn down your throttle into the negative position(or hold S I guess, I use a logitech stick) you aren't giving it negative thrust, just less.
        Long story short, devs decided that the thrust is decreased by a greater amount on the transport than the attack, and can drop faster. If I had to guess, it was because a transport would have to drop quickly to load or unload passengers, while an attack chopper would be used for flying around quickly to shoot people up.

        And the "tool" part of my name refers to the band. They're coming out with a new album in the not-too-distant future, by the way.

            What I do to get down is a nice juicy roll. Just roll it over upside down and pull it out when you get close enough. The main bonus is that it looks more impressive

              They drop like bricks when you get out though (assuming you're not up high with full throttle) It's the same like when I was just learning to land a jet, if you brake too late you can basically survive getting out at 350 kp/h and immediately going prone. The jet stops in a few meters as opposed to slamming into a tree
