The new 802.1n is being released in early 2007, double what you get with wireless 802.1g, so that should be interesting.

In regards to the previous statement that one shouldn't be "securing" their router, you're misguided. When you allow anyone to receive an IP address from your router, essentially not securing your network, you are open to a very easy "hack" attack. That person not only has access to your internet, they also have access to your "shared" computers. You're essentially giving anyone with basic networking knowledge to have access to your files, folders, settings, etc.

The best and overall most secure wireless setup is MAC address restriction. I have it even with my wired connections. This limits the who gets to have access to your network by their unique network card identifier. There are no two alike, the same concept as an IP address. Your MAC address can also be called your "physical address".

I've played BF2 and other FPS games on 802.1b with absolutely no ill effects. I don't understand why people think it's a bottleneck when clearly our internet connections take the cake when concerned about overall speed/latency.

LOL...I didn't mean any disrespect, but since I am in this line of business, it's one of those things I tend to stress to my clients.

The problem does lie in the wireless security, WEP encryption is weird in its compatibility between cards and access points. Having MAC restrictions is a great tool, not only does it secure your network, it also allows for proper auditing, etc etc.

I can see how living on a piece of land that size wouldn't bother you, but the poster's comment begged me to believe he lived in a rural or even "tenant" area, which can be a problem with anyone and everyone connecting either willingly or unwillingly to your network.

When not running on WEP, the ICMP packets are directed properly through the TCP protocol. When you add security however, you are technically "bottlenecking" your connection because your "hardware" requires you pass through two protocols, rather than one. It does affect overall performance, I've proven this time after time! :)...however, the drops in performance are negligible, and most would never notice, as in your case. Also, 802.1b, if I recall, uses a very simple form of WEP, where-as 802.1g has both available (64bit and 128bit)

So what does that mean to you? Well it means i can hack in to other computers on the internet and assume your identity. If anything happens YOU get the blame for it.

IE: A normal hacker would protect his ip adress when attempting to access a computer of value on the internet with a proxy, but even a proxy isn't perfect because your ip is on that so whats the perfect solution? YOUR ip adress. Your problem you get busted. Or at least your isp disconnects you for breaking there terms of service. A hacker couldn't give a **** about your 'data'.

Of course as its me i'd go knock on your door (as i did with my neighbour) and offer to encrypt your wireless for you :)

interesting point. do you have any legal cases to reference this statement? i'm curious as to if anyone has ever been actually convicted, or hell, even arrested for someone else using their connection to do illegal acts.

you have a case on your ISP TOS may be violated if you don't protect others from using your network access, but the worst that would happen there as you indicated is they may just turn you off and you go to another. a hassle at the most. and chances are, unless they start using it to host pr0n off of (which is unlikely because most uploads suck bad enough) and using inordinate amounts of bandwidth, your ISP probably won't ever care.

but to imply there would be legal repurcussions for me not securing my wifi and someone else using it to perform illegal acts is preposterous. its like claiming because i left my car unlocked and someone stole it and ran someone over, i'm at fault for their death simply because i didn't lock my car. wth are you talking about???

Just in a friendly debate, I don't doubt a wired connection is better in some instances. Especially for a lan it'd help. But for online gaming 802.11b is 54Mbs, my dsl (yea no cable internet in my area) is 1.5Mbs....what's the limiting factor there? As regards to interference, I haven't experienced any. At least I haven't noticed any.

Where I'm living, the dsl line is downstairs. I'm upstairs. Don't really want to go in the walls and run a line there. I'd probably need a repeater also. Wireless is a great alternative for me, also I have a few laptops with wireless. Regardless of wired or wireless, my lag is from my wife downloading stuff. Other than that I can get a 20ms ping on a good server with no hiccups.

I agree I don't like the issues with security but the trade off out weights it. I got MAC filtering, stealth network, and encryption. Plus most of my neighbors are too stupid.

A friend of mine didn't want to pay for internet, spent days brute forcing someone else's wireless and now leeches like mad.

Thing I still worry about is someone capturing enough packets to try and grab data, that's why I don't use a signal booster or anything.

Just in a friendly debate, I don't doubt a wired connection is better in some instances. Especially for a lan it'd help. But for online gaming 802.11b is 54Mbs, my dsl (yea no cable internet in my area) is 1.5Mbs....

802.1b = 11mbps

802.1g = 54mbps

802.1n = ???...for now

It works ok on firefoz, msn, dloading etc but as soon as u go and log in on BF2 it will be okay for about 5mins and then gamespy would disconnect me!!!! is it a compatability issue or is wireless Crapy all together????

Please Help me out on this one! I have to stay round my mates house and steal his 10 meg connection just to play BF2 online!

I'm always wireless on a laptop and have no problem other than the occasional BF2-specific disconnect which seemed like a bigger problem in 1.2 and 1.21 but seemed to go away with 1.22.

I dont think BF2 "knows" if you're wireless. I think it'll disconnect you regardless due to it's own bugs, but I could be wrong (maybe it can sense a weak signal?).

It works now with the cable so i dont think that it would be the BF2 bugs'... It may have been a week xonnection but on the belikin programe it said that iw was strong and it workd fine on the net and downloading lol but it all good now any ways! My dad finnally agrees to run the cable throught the floor :)
