    Re: 7900GTX or x1900xt

ATI hardware = and sometimes > Nvidia Hardware.

    ATI Software <<<<<< Nvidia Software.

Sorry but the bods at ATI still cant write drivers like the bods at Nvidia. Games are primarily built on, and developed for Nvidia video cards and on the whole, have less issues with nvidia than with ATI. Back in the day when the R200/300 kicked the crap out of the FX 5800 it was worth dealing with ATI's drivers because the cards were so much better. Now days, that the hardware is fairly close, so personally I've taken the easy route and gone with nvidia.

PS i'm not a biased consumer, I gladly switch from 1 make to the other, video card history going back in time is NV GF7800GTX512 SLI, ATI Radeon X800XTPE, NV GF6800U, ATI Radeon 9800 PRO, NV GF4TI 4400, ATI Radeon DDR, NV Geforce 2 GTS, ATI Rage 128....

So you are saying that at this present time ATI has still problems with BF2 (and maybe other games)?

      I was ready to jump 6800GT ---> x1900xt, but I'm scared.

I've never had a single problem with any of the software that I've gotten from ATI and I've been using ATI since I started playing games 8 years ago. I'm going to be purchasing a X1900XTX on the 20th. Definately go for the X1900XT, BIC.

from wat i heard it runs just as well as the new 7900GTX but i would still go for in your case the 7900GTX and for people getting a new comp in the next few months go for the 7900GTX aswell!

lol, please don't follow this advice....

            Re: 7900GTX or x1900xt

I have an X1900XT and have no problem with it or the catalyst drivers. BF2 at Ultra High settings 4xAA 8x HQ AF at 1280x960 (85hz), never seen FPS below 50, most of the time its in the 90's. The card kicks the crap out of BF2.

The fan can get loud as the card heats up, but if you wear headphones or have the volume up, you will hardly notice it unless your PC is on your desk or something.

            Pros -
-been able to play all my games at max settings no problem, even Tomb Raider legend with next gen settings ran well (dipped into the low 20's at some times though but damn does that game look good)

            - O/C easily to XTX speeds with CCC overdrive feature.

            Cons

-gets pretty hot and heats up my room pretty well, at least I wont need to turn the heat on in the winter

            - fan can be distracting at times as its variable speed and can be heard speeding up and slowing down

            - card is BIG and may block SATA ports on some Mobos (I have DFI Lanparty Ultra D and it blocks SATA 1,2 ports. I use 3,4 for my HDDs)

Overall I am very pleased with this card, my previous card was an X800XL and this card is 3 times better. I will be purchasing the Arctic Accelero X2 cooler to ease the noise factor and keep the temp on the card down (it reaches mid 80's after 3-4 hours of BF2, apparently its normal for the x1900 to run hot)

I have no opinion on the Nvidia cards, the only one I have owned was a FX5200. I hope you are happy with whatever choice you make

ive had less problems with my two older ati cards 9700 pro and 9200se both performed well and my 9700 pro is still running today on a older rig

than the three nvidia cards i have had ti 4600-(compatablility issues) fx 5200(overheated) 7800gt-(did not like 1.2 patch fixed now with 1.22)

                Re: 7900GTX or x1900xt

As many have said, The x1900 I have has been invested in a cooler, the card performes better but also as mentioned = Hot.

Both Ati and Nvidia have had problems, If I'm not mistaken, the game was tested on an Nvidia card, anyway, There was a problem before with some of the lower range Ati Cards and this was resolved in the next patch, not too many cards have problems witht he game now seeing it's been out for a while. The driver set 6.2 if probably what your looking for, seems to be very stable and same to the 5.13 exteme or 5.11 drivers. Both have pro's and cons but from your posts, it seems you leaning toward the X1900, it's a fine card, In conclusion,

Card is excellent in game, Runs hot. Invest in a cooler for it and bam, your done. No one has mentioned problems with Bf2 with this card as to this date, as I said before, the lower range cards seem to have problems.

Ok so ATI owners take note of your fps on a certain map, then play commander for awhile and bring up the commander screen a fair few times. Notice the massive decrease in framerate?

The post at amd forums is about dual core cpu affinity issues. This is fixed with the latest amd X2 driver and the MS dual core hotfix.

                        Re: 7900GTX or x1900xt

I've bounced back and forth between ATI and Nvidia over the years and have no bone to pick with either. They are fighting back and forth pushing bleeding edge products to market and so the "glitch factor" is going to seesaw back and forth unpredictably.

If you want the best card on the market right now, go with the ATI. Yes you can quibble back and forth about which is really best, but the ATI wins on more criteria that really matter during actual gameplay.

And if you are looking for bleeding edge gaming performance (which you obviously are if you're looking at these two cards), then I would seriously consider a dual card set up, either now or as an upgrade. True, dual cards don't make that much of a difference when you are poking along in undemanding parts of your game, but when the game starts stressing your hardware they come into their own and make a visable and considerable difference. In the dual card world there is SLI, end of story. Crossfire is not mature and is not ready for prime time.

One thing to also consider is your upgrade path. Not only are you choosing between these two cards now, you are committing to a platform for the life your mobo. If that is not a considertion because you will upgrade the whole machine in a year or two then, then go with whichever. But in the longer term (2-4 year) view I think the momentum is in Nvidia's court.

yes, but that happened with my x800 too, just caplock out and back in again and the fps goes back up.

                            Re: 7900GTX or x1900xt

I went from a 7800GTX to a 1900XTX. I've been running Nvidia since the GF1. My 7800GTX is an awsome card but I have to admit this 1900XTX is a beast. The performance in BF2 is great (far better then my 7800GTX. On the driver side, BF2 had issues with my 6800 Ultra and my 7800GTX (crashes / BCOD etc). I thought for sure with ATI drivers it might get worse. Well I had it running for about a month and not one single problem. On the image quality side, I think ATI's so-called quality is overblown. Overall BF2 looks better on Nvidia. Shadows, and textuers just look better on Nvidia drivers, period. Its not a huge difference but its their.

Not really a fair comparison though is it? Pitch the X1900XTX vs the 7900GTX or a 7800GTX512 and the real world differences are not that huge.
