    Afraid of the DARK?

I love Night maps. I think it’s what makes SF feel like such a different game and it makes an interesting change to playing Vanilla in broad daylight all the time. Night maps are the main reason I got SF.

But the really disappointing thing for me is that not many other people seem to like Night maps. The only servers I add to my favourites are ones that have at least 1 Night map in the cycle. But nearly every time I check them they are sitting on a Night map empty or with not enough players to start or they are currently running the day maps and full of players. Quite often I’ve played them patiently waiting for a Night map to come up and when it does the players all up and leave!

There doesn’t appear to be any ranked servers that ‘only’ host Night Maps either that I know of. However there are actually SF servers that host ‘Day Maps Only’ and I really don’t understand the point of that. Personally the only two day maps I like on SF are Warlord and Ghost Town. I know SF has some new toys but to be honest I would much rather still play Vanilla than only play SF with day maps! I guess it’s a bit like Ice Cream. I enjoy Vanilla but I prefer chocolate. If someone gives me Neapolitan I’d rather just eat the chocolate even though there is also Vanilla and Strawberry on offer. So to me the people who play SF but only on day maps are like the sort of people who started eating Vanilla Ice cream, got offered Neopolitan and chose to eat the Vanilla and maybe the Strawberry but left the chocolate well alone.

This is why I never play SF much and it’s because playing on Night maps seem to be a rarity and no one wants to share the chocolate Ice Creamy goodness with me. BOO HOO!

The green gets old after a while but having said that, I do like playing the night maps on occasion... just not as often as the day maps.

For me the broad daylight gets old aswell. lol

I like vision modes as much as I like Night Maps too. I was a long time Predator player in AvP gold and AvP2. I miss those days. It's just a shame Punkbuster never supported it.

Yeah Devil's Perch used to be a nightmare before they fixed the textures. You couldn’t see where you were going on the cliff side. But now that you can see where you are putting your feet I like it a whole lot better.

I'd prefer it if Surge, Iron Gator and Mass Destruction that I don’t like so much were set at Night instead of day. I might actually like them that way.

I keep hearing people complain about lag with SF too. That's a shame. It runs fine on my system provided I turn all of the video settings to medium except for Geometry. I still have AA on 2 and res up to 1280x1024 85hz. My fps average 40. However Iron Gator pulls my fps right down to the 20's most of the time, which is weird. Maybe bad map optimisation and holes.

                Re: Afraid of the DARK?

I too rarely see night maps in rotation, for me, the whole point of the SF add-on IS the night maps and the night vision.

I love it when you're sneaking about on hills or in bushes with your goggles on and sniping at people.

People who don't like the night maps should try mapping the goggles to a button on their mouse (like one of the side buttons-used for forward/back in explorer), then its no effort switching.

I too wish there were some night map only servers, hopefully admins will read this and give them another go.

Would think less lag due to less color usage on Video Cards. I haven't experienced any lag on night maps.

Hoooraaay! I think the BF2 community needs a lot more people like you robertgilbert86! Aswell as an extra Night Map expansion for SF of course.

I realy love all the night maps and have to agree it is sometimes hart to find a server that runs em. But it is getting harder to find a poulatet 64 slot SF server anyway .

                          Re: Afraid of the DARK?

I played Night Flight pretty often when I first got SF - for quite a while it was my most played SF map and I really like it. However, I haven't seen it actually being played on any server (ie game in progress, not a server with it on but no players) in two or three months. I've seen Devil's Perch being played a few times, but I personally hate that map. Leviathan I've never seen and so never played - I didn't even realise it was a night map!

But yes, more night maps on the servers I think - Night Flight is great and I really would like to try out the map that I've never gotten to play yet!

I think a lot of people don't like having to swap between NVG on and off (in the well-lit areas under street-lights etc), and since the shaders have to be reoptimised every time you load a night map it takes ages to actually get into the game and I think a lot of people lose patience. Plus I know a couple of people who claim that they lag a lot on SF, and even more so on the night maps, and get annoyed when the battery on their NVG goes flat...

Thats wrong you just have to optimise shaders the first time you play a night map.

Yeah, if you're playing multiple consecutive night maps - but as we said, there are very few night maps around the place, so you seldom play two different night maps back to back. And every time you change between a day and a night map, it has to optimise the shaders... On mine anyway. Is it not meant to be that way?
