Let's see what they'd be like without their fancy gadgets.
You obviously are uneducated on what is going on there. The insurgents are NOT defending their country. Their sole purpose is to kill all of the infidels. (Non-muslims) They bomb their own people. Do you really expect U.S. to give them high tech weapons so they can kill us with them? Honor in war died with fairy tales with knights and dragons. This is real life. And perhaps you all havent read my post. They were setting up a IED (Improvised Explosive Device). Its a huge pipe bomb. Minutes after they were taken out, an American convoy rolled through.

        There is a diference.

There could be cause for complaint because they used the Apache's 30mm cannon against personell. It is a bit of a grey area, but one could make an argument for the explosive shells causing inhumane wounds.
From an earlier rebuttal (probably yours) it was said that US doesn't even acknowledge the 'soldier' status of the insurgents....

THerefore, US pilots and soldiers are actually shooting civilians..

PLUS, is a man missing a leg, and rolling around on the ground in agony, when his other 2 comrades were blown to PIECES not a man who's surrendered?

All too often you americans try to justify your actions. Frankly, I'd bring up those pilots for warcrimes. IT doesn't matter where you're from, all similar punishments to all people. If not? Then that's american democracy for you.

I mean come on.. ffs another guy in another thread tried to justify the atrocities of agent orange in Vietnam.. I'd smack him up the damn head.

You really need to watch the propaganda factory.

The insurgents are just as badly spun to the western world as the infidals are to the Iraqi people. Not every insurgent is a suicide bomber. There's a very large number of them out there that snipe. We don't hear much about that over here simply because it's not as sensational as IEDs.

Also, to some of the more extream fundementalistis anyone who doesn't fight the Americans is an enemy and a traitor to their homeland. Sounds insane, doesn't it? Well... how about that who US civil war thing? That was American killing american over what? The right to own people? Now that is insane.

Try to keep some prespective on the whole thing.

The bottom line is that war sucks. It's never something that should be rushed into and there's never a clear line between "good guys" and "bad guys".

Civilians are not protected by the conventions of war which you were referring to. "Civilians" that are about to set up an IED ambush are valid targets.

He hasn't surrendered until he has surrendered. If I were down in that part of a world fighting seriously crazy people I would make sure they were dead before pronouncing them safe.

But if they shot "civilians" in a police action how can they be indicted for war crimes?

I have no wish to defend the american pig-dogs but screaming bloody murder at only one of the misbehaving sides is wrong. In this particular case I understand that they would want the insurgents dead. You only need proper use of your fingers to push down a detonator button.

When are you going to criticise the insurgents for targeting non-combatants?

Actually they can be. This is one of the reasons that the international war tribue was established.

If there is a complaint they are meant to do as investigators do. Go collect evidence, and hold a trial. If it was found that the soldiers were in breech of ROE, then they are FUBAR.

While I am sure there are atrocities being conducted by both sides, the one in controll doesn't have to stoop to terror tactics like car bombing police, and Iraqi police at that, buildings and convoys.

People have used insurgent tactics for as long as there have been occupying armies. They always will.

At an air show this summary, I was talking with an Apache pilot. I asked about the machine gun under the nose, and he said it had a 20ft kill radius, ie one explosive shell would kill anything within a 20 foot radius when it hits the ground.

                    20 feet.

Makes the MEC chopper seem like a BB gun, doesn't it?

Er. I think he might have been refering to the effects of a burst. Ie, you point that gun someplace squeeze off a burst, and everything within 20 feet of that spot will be dead.

20 feet is a rather large area for a single explosive 20mm shell.

                        Re: the real tv missile

Apaches have 30mm rounds, just for the record. I'm not exactly sure what their blast radius is but I do know that our Cobra's 20mm rounds are roughly like grenades as far as casualty radius.

As far as everything else, I can see there's more than enough anti-american sentiment here and it is disturbing. Generalizing groups of people can be a dangerous thing but most people seem to have no problem doing it. But hey, why listen to an American pig-dog/infidel/(insert your favorite insult) anyways, right? After all, we are all just bloodthirsty people with no regard for human life or morals...

We are all succeptible to mistakes and these are magnified in war. When your butt is on the line, you do what you think you need to do to stay alive or save other people. This may mean possibly killing people that you did not intend to kill or "violating" the laws of war...you know, the one's only we are held accountable for. Don't worry about the extremists who are cutting heads off of innocent civilians or dragging bodies around the streets. It's hard to fight a battle with "laws" that your enemy doesn't follow but we do our best. However, nobody is perfect.

                          Re: the real tv missile

It's like the Argentinians who tried to call "unfair treatment" when the Brits killed a bunch of them "after the surrendered".

What the forgot to point out was they were throwing grenades and shooting at the Brits right until their positions were overrun as then as the Brits were stabbing their bayonetts forwards were dropping their guns and going "I give up!".

Too late. Allowances are made for the heat of combat.

But on the note of the Apache's 30mm gun and the Cobra's 20mm, 20 feet is excessive. Especially as a RADIUS. Thats a 40' DIAMETER blast. To put it politely, thats a big assed explosion.

A 40mm grenade used in a M203, or a Mk-19 only has a 5 meter blast radius, and thats what, 16'? And that's from a larger explosive round thats traveling at low veolcity. I seriously doubt any cannon ammunition of a lower caliber can match that.

Ever notice how the grenade lunachers in BF2 not don't do as much damage as the aircraft cannons?

As for the Geneva/Hauge argument, the small print says you only have to follow them if 1) both parties are signatories and 2) if both parties stick to them.

If your enemy doesn't follow them, you don't need to either.
