Norton's Antivirus

When ever I log on to Xfire Norton's Antivirus attacks me with pop-ups telling me a worm is attacking my computer and if it's sharing files, online gaming, or instant messaging to hit permit. I have to hit permit constantly. I also get the same message while updating my server list in BF2 and playing BF2. I looked in the "program control" and both Xfire and BF2 have "permit all" next to them. wtf?

Anyone know a better antivirus prgram btw?

Yes its a crap firewall ( BitDefender Ownz ) Its beacuse xfire logs everything you do your program info and ur docs everything ! thats why it is poping up warning you that its sending your files over. This only happnes if you are on desktop not in game ..

Hmm. . . I think the one's I get in game are "We have detected a worm program trying to enter your computer, File name: BF2.exe."

Yes its a crap firewall ( BitDefender Ownz ) Its beacuse xfire logs everything you do your program info and ur docs everything ! thats why it is poping up warning you that its sending your files over. This only happnes if you are on desktop not in game ..

Of course it is a 'crap firewall', especially when he's talking abount Norton Antivirus and not Norton's Firewall product.

You can turn off the Internet Worm protection in the NAV options.

or better yet, IMO, uninstall Norton and use a free antivirus that is just as good or better:

I use norton. Ever since I banned Xfire from my machine (I never really used it anyway) I have had 0 alerts.

Yes, I use AVAST!
The Home Edition is free for Home and non-commercial use. You download and install and you can use for 60 days. If you register you can use it for 1 year, I think. Registration is only your e-mail and name and it is still free. You renew registration after it runs out, but still is free so there's not time limit for free use.


I leave the Worm protection to my firewall, Sygate Personal Firewall, and not my antivirus product. Worm protection is about looking for traffic on ports etc, and this is no job for an AV product IMO. AV product should only find it if it actually gets onto the hard drive.

Note:
Sygate has been bought by Symantec/Norton, but you can stilll find SPF on the Internet, and I use that untill it is outdated or something better comes up.

nah, dont use that avast, if its free, it probly doesnt work very well. I use the latest bitdefender product, I havent gotten a single virus, and it does really good with detecting spyware. And its easy to use firewall wise, as in it asks you once, you tell it an answer and youre done.

Oh yeah, and Norton fricken sucks!

I think when u get an alert u can click a box on the alert to tell it not to alert again for the same prob. Norton's is a difficult beast, Ghost made my game run like a brick until i got rid of it. then all of a sudden i was losing connection at the "Verfiying client data stage" and the server would then be offline to me...turns out Nortons worm protection was detecting a portscan from the game server and decided to autoblock it for 30 mins. Bloody annoying cos it took me a week to realise this was happening. All firewall/antivirus software is a nightmare, however, viruses and trojans are a bigger nightmare. Unfortunately, this is the society we live in

Maybe, maybe not. Do you have a router out in front of your connection? If you do then you can shut down unnecessary inbound and outbound ports. I used to use Black Ice Defender and/or Zone Alarm and they are pretty much a waste of time if you have a properly configured router in front of your connection, shut down unnecessary services and follow simple disciplines when downloading any files or attachments. Also make sure to keep Windows up-to-date. Turn on automatic updates and let your system take care of itself for those patches. Last, use something like Adaware or Spybot Search & Destroy at least occasionally. The vast majority of people who pickup virusues (whether they be trojans, worms or whatever) and spyware get them because of not following a few basic precautions. I've never had a virus or spyware (other than tracking cookies which barely count) on any of my systems by following those precautions.

If you haven't tried Avast maybe you shouldn't comments on how good or bad it is? FYI it is certified ISCA, which indicates it is a serious product.

And just because you havn't got a virus while using bitdefender doesn't make it a good antivirus product. If you use a bulletproof vest and you haven't been shot you really can't say if the vest is good or not

What in the mother is a bulletproof west? And actually, I had bitdefender turned off once, went on the internet got a virus, ran bitdefender, cleaned the viruses no problem (i had 3 viruses). And, i wasnt saying that Avast sucks, Im just saying that (in most cases) the free deal isnt as good as something you have to pay for.

Yep routers are awesome, i only have Anti-Virus on my laptop. My other 2 desktops are protection free. They run nice and smooth without ever having those annoying Virus alerts and such annoy me while i am at them.
