Re: Rampent Speculation: 2142 is Dice's Magnum Opus

I hope it works out and everyone loves it, but it looks pretty cheesy. And not in the cool "Robocop" flavor of cheeze either. The problem with the Battlefield 2 maps is that they're clean. I'm really looking forward to Quake Wars because they specificially went after that dirty look, plus the gameplay looks amazing.

If EA used the same, or a similiar, engine for 2142 as they did in BF2, then it's going to lack a lot of potential fun. The only way I'd really enjoy 2142 is if it was released with like 10-15 beautiful maps, was pretty much bug free, was optimized and had realistic physics, and had some seriously interactive environments. In a futuristic war like they're suggesting, I should be able to team up with two or three other mechs and blast down parts of a building or something to block off enemy advancement.

But since it already has a current release date (probably will be delayed... several times), I seriously doubt it'll be much more different than BF2.

This isn't a game I'm looking forward to with anxious delight. Quake Wars? Yep. Aftermath? Yep.

As a long time veteran of the Tribes community (going on 7 years now.) I can see some of the ideas they took from Tribes in BF2, and even more so in the 2142 images.

But without jetpacks, it's not Tribes, period.

And I'll say this again, reguarding all the naysayers who complain about 2142, you people are the same one's who complained about BF2/SF/EU and I would put money that over half of you bought all 3 of those. JUST like you'll buy 2142. People like you, love to complain.

Bf2 was not a stopgap, if you want a stopgap it was vietnam. 2142 is simply more money for them and anyone that thinks they truly care about the games they make obviously hasn't noticed the lack of support for their games and the all the bugs and problems in the game when they are released.

I've bought all three but never complained about them (except for SF peformance before I got my new videocard). I know you weren't talking specifically about me, but just figured I'd mention it =P

2142 is basicaly a total conversion mod for BF2 imo.

Oh... I so hate it when consumers start tossing around catchphrases like "next-gen", while clearly not understanding what it means.

Quake Wars will be based on a refined version (mod) of the Quake 4 engine. It's not even been produced in-house by Id... it's Splash Damage that's doing the work.

            Visual Richness?
Yeah, it's perty perty, but you know that it's going to be restricted to maps sizes of 1 mile MAX (less than a quarter of the map size that the BF2 engine can do) and the play cap will be fixed at 32. Let's not forget that the base engine being used is very well know for it's CRAP netcode.

BF2142 will be based on a refined version of the BF2 engine. We know the engine can handle 64 players and the map sizes can be huge. We also know that the netcode is perty tight. More than that, we know Dice is into making interesting mechanics and pushing inovation in the genre.

Personally, I hope both games are great, but I've got more faith in Dice than I do in Id.

Yep i think 2142 will be great, especially if you a sci-fi head. What i do hope is that the make the game more solid this time. The only areas were dice has ever failed imo, is the lack of a bug-free solid game world environment and the failure to fix known problems fast.
