Magnum opus
from the Latin meaning great work, refers to the best, most popular, or most renowned achievement of an author, artist, or composer. For instance, Don Quixote is the magnum opus of Miguel de Cervantes, as In Search of Lost Time is the magnum opus of Marcel Proust, and as The Jungle is the magnum opus of Upton Sinclair. It can also refer to an individual literary or artistic masterpiece.

Most of you long time Dice fans are likely to remember intereviews and comments they made way back when about how much the Tribes games influanced their development of the BF series. I also recall and interview in PC Gamer, way back when, where the dev crew was asked what their ideal project would be. The responded by saying how much they would love to do a large scale sci-fi based game on a tactical level.
So I was remembering this and thinking about the development timeline involved in BF2 and it occured to me; maybe the whole point of BF2 was to use it as a stopgap project to bring to market while the focused on doing what they always wanted to do... make that sci-fi game a reality.
This would help explain why certain features (like different gametypes) weren't brought to light in BF2. Their real focus has been on their first love and have been quietly working on BF2142 all this time.
As I say in the thread title, this is wild speculation, but some facts fit 'n I thought I'd bounce it off you folks.
It wouldn't be the first time a cover project was brought to market for the purpose of helping a "real" project become a reality.
