Best way for new players to start?

    Hi there,

Before anyone dismisses me as a "noob", please hear me out.

I am indeed new to this particular game but have been playing computer/video games since 1979.

Could anyone advise me on the best place for new players to learn the skills needed to be a useful addition to an army or squad?

I've only played Battlefield 2 a handful of times and I never last long before being killed.

Are there particular servers or maps to start out on? Are there even servers that are specifically for new players to get to grips with the game?

Are there places you can go to learn how to fly planes and helicopters?

Having the opportunity to practice and hone my game skills would be really helpful; and this sort of thing would stop new players being a hazard to more experienced and skilled players.

To learn to fly try starting your own server locally and playing off line or picking an empty one online. In fact you can use that to try all of the vehicles and you don't TK anyone or offend anyone with your beginners skills as you learn how they work.

Once you are comfortable with how things work in BF2, I would start on small maps, or at least servers with smaller numbers of people on them. Don't know of any particular servers that you can try this on, but if you are concerned about your stats at all start on unranked servers until you are comfortable and then go to larger games from there.

i'd agree with these people. Strike of karkand is indeed a good map to start and you "should" get some training with vehicles too. With that said instead of spec ops i think support is best for beginning just my opinion

            do what i did:

everytime you die slap yourself. everytime you kill take a sip of your beer.

you'll learn real quick. Problem is - if you start doing real good, you get drunk. A few slaps will cure that though.

Seriously though - practice in single player to find what weapon and fighting style suits you. But keep in mind, the bots are kind of stupid, and real people are f'in sneaky as hell.

I found bots are a lot more intelligent than most people if they manage to get out from base, but again, maybe it's because on my custom map everyone of them use tanks.

also, if you want to get vehicle time, search for the map daqing_oilfield, it's an excellent vehicle map and vehicles are easier to get.

Single player on expert is a step below most people's skill online. Play single player expert to get a feel for how well you might expect people to play. Once you're good there, try it out online I guess.

Start on single or on your own local server. learn the Heli and Plane drop bombs and fire missles get used to the action. When you go live start in strike at karkand if you can survive there you can survive anywhere.

Like someone else said, start on small servers. Less lag = more accuracy. Less players = less deaths and more chances to get better with player on player fights, instead of what happens in 64 player maps, player on....no someone shot you from behind again. Small servers are great for learning how to play all classes well.

If you want to brave the big servers then start off sniper. It'll give you a good chance to play online, learn the maps, and witness player strategy all at the same time. I started learning maps offline but quickly became bored, wanting to play online. So when I jumped online sniper became my class of choice, for the ability to stay out of harms way, and still get kills and call out enemy troops at the same time. Call out everything you possibly can. You're a huge asset to your team this way.

It may seem kinda wimpy, but soon you'll be braving the run to cap a flag, or know where to position yourself to defend it properly. This game is all about the flags, learn to play around that. Killing is fun, and gets you points, but it doesn't help your team any. The sooner you play for flags, the more fun you'll have.

It took me a good month to graduate from almost all sniping to using whatever class is needed. I came from RVS. A game that has its ballistics correct, and you are either hit or dead... there is no in between. It took me some time to adjust to BF2's arcade style with-real-guns format.

get a feel for playing single player at expert
maybe try a server with nobody playing, join it to explore the map, find vantage points, paths, and spots to hide.
practice using all your available weapons, throwing grenades at different distances, get used to using med kits, planting c4, and fixing things.
GET A GOOD FEEL for your controls!
Now observe some 16 player servers using a map your comfortable with. watch the server and update to view the battle stats. if the score is lopsided and you join that server, you'll probably end up on the loosing team and get creamed without learning anything. alot of spawn killing and isolating spawn points goes on, for them your just point padding. you'll find a few good soldiers out there that will work with you. hope this helps

                        good luck and have fun

Grab a medic kit and stick close to your squad. See how they use their classes, and make sure to keep them alive.

That'll show you a lot, right there.

                            Exactly..

While your a noob do the things that require no skill but still roll in points.. by the time you understand the game you should have enough points for a couple unlocks..

Sniper class - lay claymores near spawns and Alleyways on Karkand..

Medic - run around healing friendlys in need as well as reviving them.. revives are great for points.. 2 points per revive - 1 squad dead from a nade = 6-12 points

Support - toss ammo bags to armour and snipers in particular.. they almost always need atleast some ammo.. Once you get enough points unlock the PKM

Use the PKM lieing down (prone).. and your good to go

As the army would tell you, the only way to learn is to jump in the deep end.

Since that's my personal experience, try a 64 man Iron Gater round and play MEC:SF. Your learning curve will be exponentially less when you 'degrade' back into battlefield 2 vanilla.
