Re: Hills and mountains morphing like a strange drug trip

I am just going out on a limb here, so don't take my word for it, but I am assuming it is similar to the lod settings for models. The further you are away from a model, the more polys drop off from it, it is supposed to help with rendering performance.

I am assuming, that this is kind of the same thing that is happening with the terrain. You can see alot of polys from a long ways away, and maybe at a certain point it starts to drop the detail from some of the terrain geometry from a long distance to make it less polys that are being rendered on your system.

    Just a guess.

I have too being seeing this since day one, i at first fought it was due to my settings only been on medium, therefore the textures weren't been rendered until i came closer to them, but my draw distance is on 100%, so i dunt know what the issue is.

i wasnt high, and i was still freaking out. it makes me dizzy too, seeing the landscape morph like that.

            It's just terrain LOD's

More precicly, it's the detail level of the terrain mesh. When you're far away, it saves rendering by averaging surfaces to larger polygons. Basicly, it averages the terrain out.

For me, it's most notable on any cliff with a road beside it. On Mash and Sharqi, the concreat walls beside the road have a tendancy to float in space at distance and when I get closer, the cliff "grows" out to meet it.

BTW, Vomit... you do some strange drugs man.

Somehow I knew you'd come and post here explaining my post in more detail.

                  Lol.

Yeah, well... blame me for trying to educate the masses.
                  It's a bad habbit.

happens all the time with hills and mountains for me as well.

I used to see it a lot until I upgraded my video card. Now I rarely see it.

Set Terrain and Geometry to High. Makes it go away.

I hate it because I do quite a bit of "mountain climbing" in BF2 and you look ahead and think "hey, I can climb that!"

You trek off into towards the rim of the map and ... wait... what's this?! My oh so perfect gradual slope is morphing into a sheer cliff. Noooooo! Best to suicide and look elsewhere...

                              Sucks! But, whatever =P

Weird, I've always played all high and 1600x1200 (cept for a short stint with my old videocard) and I've always seen this.

yeah, I don't think it ever completely goes away ... increasing your terrain detail "should" theoretically increase the distance at which it occurs, but I haven't tried it yet as it doesn't really bother me and my graphics card is already taxed as it is.
