Keep jumping. Any good admin would simply report that the traffic level of your node exceeds that of anyone else (or atleast the limits a regular working user would be using), and you'd be out on your ass looking for a job.

Heh. I'm sure I don't eat up nearly as much bandwidth periodically checking the forums than some of my coworkers who stream audio 9-5. Match that with the fact that they can't see WHAT I'm surfing and I'm not a very big blip on their radar.

That's how my job works too. While it technically isn't allowed no one bothers you about it as long as you get the job done and don't abuse it (e.g. porn).

Again, a decent admin with a background in security would crack the SSH, or cut it off. Unless your doing some kind of work that would specifically call for SSH connections.

Chances are, the admins are just average joe's like yourself who just wanna chill and make bank while working an average pace.

They have port 22 closed to keep SSH connections to a minimum, but left port 21 open. All I had to do was forward port 21 requests to port 22 of my *nix box at home and I was in. Aside from that, there's not a whole lot they can do. I was under the impression that SSH traffic was encrypted, so I don't think it would be very simple to decrypt my transmissions.

But anyways... it's not like I do it so much that I'm attracting a lot of attention. I may check the forums once every couple of hours and read news articles. I'm just not big on "The Man" tracing my steps or surfing habits at work. The people that sit around me are constantly streaming audio (as I noted before) and even leave non-work-related sites like ESPN open throughout work hours. So long as I get my work done when it needs to be, I don't see a problem with what I'm doing.

Edit: and considering the things I see going on at my workplace, I'd have to agree that the admins are probably just as laid back as the rest of us. Seems like a pretty upbeat place to work. Too bad I work for a consulting firm and probably won't be there forever.

The Network Nazis we had while I was interning at Thomson Consumer Electronics, on the other hand, were quite the opposite. No cnn.com, mail.yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, slashdot.org, redvsblue.com, happytreefriends.com, homestarrunner.com, etc, etc.

SSH is encrypted, but there are always tools around things.

It would take a big security nerd with a lot of spare time to sit there and make your life hell by decrypting it, or tracing the port and cutting it off every time you connect.

Time is simply a luxury that network admins dont have, too many non-personnel problems going on to deal with a few employees browsing some innocent forums.

I dont really see anything wrong with occasional browsing of forums and things....however the freemails let a lot of spyware/viri in because people who use computers but arent IT people appear to be the dumbest of dumb sometimes. And streaming audio/video for pleasure is a nasty waste of bandwidth, and id probly bitch slap those people.

Browsing a forum thats a few Kb a page is not of much consequence to the company, though.
