I ran real tests on my best system
512 then 1gb then 1.5 then 2 then 2.5
all jumps were GREAT
make sure you put right size ram in right slots
all MB are different
I can comment on the 512mb memory question. I have a Athlon 64 3500+ ,7800gtx and 1gb of memory. Well i sold half my memory and ordered a 2gb kit so while i was waiting for it to get here i had to play on 512mb. It was terrible, before i could run the game @1280x960 4xAA 8xaf all HIGH except textures and lighting which had to be set to medium due to stuttering. With only 512mb it was unplayable even with a 7800gtx @ 1024x786 LOW setting. It took so long to get into a game that i was usually disconnected before i could even play and when i did get ingame the stuttering was so bad i could not stand it. I couldnt believe they said 512m was the min cause it was so jerky at times. Trying to look around fast became a challenge. If your main concern is BF2 performance, go with 2gb. This game LOVES memory. I say 1gb is the min and at that you will have to run textures and lighting on medium due to not enough memory. With 2gb i can run the game all high @1280x960 4xAA 8XAF stutter free. So basically i got the 2gb so i could bump textures and lighting to high from medium, was it worth it for one game? ehhh yea i think so. All my games seems to run smoother regardless and my computer is just quicker all around. Now i dont ever have to worry about being low on memory at all and thats how i like it. Yes 2gb isnt needed by too many games but i expect that to change soon so id say 2gb is now the new mark that people should go for. All new PCs i build have atleast 1gb, even for people that dont play games since apps and multitasking can hog memory aswell.
2 gb is completely useless at the moment with gaming, 1 gb is more than enough, better upgrade to 1 gb total, and save up and get a better vga card
1GB is good but check around, 2GB should be the "required". 2GB gets rid of starting game stutter and keeps everything more stable. When you run 1GB, you'll see BF2 use all of the RAM but when you go up to 2GB it has more overhead. Meaning it probably needs only about 1.5 GB or so but the best way to go is 2GB. I can't imagine going back to 1GB.
