    Re: Are you a Pilot?

Alcorr I'm not making the assumption based upon K/D.

I am making the assumption based upon TOTAL kills.

K/D ratio is just another statistic that supports the assumption. On average the higher the players total kills are the higher thier K/D ratio is.

What you say might be true if we were talking about one person with say 50 total kills.

Hell he could have a K/D of 50 if he got lucky the first time.

But, we are talking about over 800 people. in the top 1%
And in order to maintain that high of a K/D over 10000 kills says something about his skills
But whether its one guy with 50 kills or 1000 with 10k kills the fact still remains that due to an incredible amount of tkers in this game, you can be an expert pilot with 20k kills and still have a k/d ratio of no higher than 5, 6 or 7 to one.....

I do agree though, that anything under 5k kills is not an expert, I consider myself an above average pilot however, and I have....some 2k kills not sure...only been flying jets for about 3 weeks.

      Re: Are you a Pilot?

i got a 7.3 ratio and 230 hours in jets

that being said, most of that time and ratio is from before 1.2, although 1.2 had less skill to air, 1.21 brings the j10 whoring back. FIX THE AA DAMNIT!

          Re: Are you a Pilot?

Alcor the short answer is...you could be right.

In fact as I was looking through the stats, every once in a while I would see some guy with 200 kills and and a really high K/D.

Thats why I put more emphasize on the total kills then the K/Ds.

If you play really poorly monitored "anything goes" servers a lot you will get tked a lot more often and nothing is done about it. If you play other servers that are monitored more closely and the tking kocksuckers are kicked then your K/D is more accurate.

I think you are also right until you get into the high numbers you are still learning to be a bf2 pilot and you don't deserve your ray bans yet. LOL

It's not just that. You can play on a well respected server that has great admins that keep the smacktard level to a minimum, but even getting sniped out of the cockpit by an enemy counts as a death in a jet. Personally, I don't think such deaths should be grouped with a pilot's kill-to-death ratio.

Seems that about the only way to really maintain (reliably) a high kill-to-death ratio in a jet is to get the jet at the very start of the round and not ever get shot down or crash.

                    Re: Are you a Pilot?

It's all irrelevant, especially when it comes to vehicles. Alot of vehicle kills are basically won on 'vehicle vs infantry' or 'jet vs anything on the ground', which for most people, should be easy kills to get. And, it doesn't judge you based on the quality of your opponent.

I would think though, if you put together K/D and KPM, you could possibly get an idea for what kind of pilot the person is (not always gonna be right though).

                    Using fictional numbers here...

                    Say you have two guys:

Bob: KD of 15/1 and KPM of 30pm
Joe: KD of 15/1 and KPM of 10pm

Without actually knowing the two, you could assume Bob likes to hammer the ground with a jet and Joe maybe likes to dogfight more. Either that, or Joe is really selective about hitting targets or takes his time. It takes a bit more time to get kills by dogfighting then by bombing, if you kind of get what I'm saying.

Another factor is the server size they most often play on. Bomp a jeep on a server with 20-30 people playing and it's probably one guy. Bomb the same jeep on a full 64 man server and get 4 kills. Same goes for bombing a flag being capped or taking out boats, APC's, etc.

                          Re: Are you a Pilot?

A ton of variables effect a pilots KDR, SPM, and KPM, but generally speaking all maps, plane types, and server sizes all have pros and cons. For example, on a 16, 24 or 32 player server you might only get one kill for dropping a bomb on a jeep, but you'll also have far less enemies to constantly man various AA posts, Mobile AA, Essex Gun, all planes ect. Bottom line is without a definite way to judge pilot skill looking at SPM/KPM and KDR and taking in to account maps played you get a pretty accurate estimation of a pilots skills. And me having the two top rated pilots on the statpadder.com list doesn't surprise me one bit, I've got the highest SPM in the game, highest KPM, and the highest legitimate KDRs and KDRs over the space of 10,000+ kills. Which makes it even more ridiculous when people talk about pilots on my level they refer to us like we're common place and it's merely the vehicle doing all the work rather than player skill.

That being said this is a great post. The above data is exactly what I've been reporting all along, numbers don't lie, and the numbers indicate very clearly that planes were balanced well in 1.11, and most pilots have a very low KDR and very low SPM (lower than infantry).

I agree completely... and as a groundpounder I would like to add that "Death rained down from above" should not count towards our K/D ratio either...

                              Re: Are you a Pilot?

I don't know how we got on to a conversation about K/D SPM and KPMs.

As most people have mentioned they lend some idea to who the pilot is, but they can also be pretty vague if you don't look at all the numbers

If you read the first page of the statics all of them where based upon total kills.

The other ratios where just a BTW. However. You don't see 5 pages of guys with a 10.5 K/D in the under 1000 kills range.

You do see that in the 8000 and up kills pages

No matter what you have to say about the other ratios. There remains a distinct connection between total kills and the other ratios. As the total number of kills go up so do the rest of the ratios.

Its true for the noobs and its true for the skilled pilots. The difference is.... there is only a small 2.5% that fall into the 7500 kills or higher

75% had 1000 kills or less.

as far as the original post, that's good info, actually makes me feel like i'm decent at something...maybe you could combine that info and compare it it helo pilots as well...i like to fly both and would be curious to see the results...and since most people specialize at one or the other it would be nice to see kind of where i fall in the "overall" pilot list, as someone that enjoys flying both...

Yeah these stats are just for jets, Those whappity whop guys have thier own stats.

BTW most good pilots will respond to chat messages. If you are getting raped,,,,, say so.

AND SPOT THE ENEMY AIRCRAFT AND THE ARMOR. A good pilot will check his mini map evertime he hears, "enemy whatever in sight" Its a target. And thats what hes looking for.

All things being equal there are very few edges in the air. But knowing where the enemy aircraft is before you go looking is a huge advantage.

Also another great tool for a good pilot is a commander who knows how to direct fire.
But thats rare even if you get them on voip and tell them to.

But regardless of what you do. Nothing you can do will help a noob pilot. He is flying for his pure enjoyment and could give a ratsass about his team.

                                If all else fails type
                                OUR PILOT IS FREAKIN WORTHLESS

                                LOL
my best rounds in a jet are when friendlies are spotting enemy vehicles and jets...if they can get a spot and give me a few seconds to respond to it I can usually take it out before it becomes a problem for them...and if they spot jets too then it's going to be a good round for our team because it gives me the oppurtunity to take out their problem while at the same time not having to worry so much about watching my ass...i can take out the enemies on the ground then divert my attention to their jet before going back and rearming and doing it again...as with most things in this game, winning really comes down to what your team is doing for eachother...teamwork is the key...
