Now mind you I know that with my current 3 posts there are a great deal of you shall most likely start yelling "noob" and other wonderfully innovative terms at me. But in spite of that I have to say that from reading a lot of other posts, and playing a LOT of BF2 that I have come to the following conclusion.
If there is anything you can do in the game which is not a hack or cheat. Do it.
The game itself defines the parameters of the conflict. It's all built into the Game Design - which people get paid to do, and then the game design is updated in patches as people find ways to "unbalance" game play.
For Instance:
Is bunny-hopping unrealistic? Well yes it is. But it's possible in the game so either take advantage of it (and have to deal with it's disadvantages as well) or don't play the game. Or more specifically if you think this detracts from the quality of the game play state that with a valid argument (not a rant) as to why it detracts from game play. I can respect that, but I can’t respect players who make it an “ethical” argument.
Another:
Spawn camp – go ahead as far as I am concerned it’s all part of the game. I have been on both ends of it. It gets frustrating when you are on the short side of it, but it’s a good tactic to use to win the game in certain circumstances, but not all.
The reason I have played this game for so long is that it allows for so much ingenuity, (jihad jeeps, etc) that it does not get stale. The idea of a good games is afford the player to win through ingenuity, reflexes, and teamwork. They are all aspects of the game. To say that something like the Grenade Launcher is a “noob tube” is pretty funny. It’s not like as you go up in rank you can no longer use the grenade launcher, it is not limited to lower ranked/noob players. So if it was such an awesome weapon then keep using it. Personally I only found it useful in certain situations and I find it fairly easy to take out a new player using a grenade launching. Perhaps all of the “veterans” who called it a “noob tube” were simply complaining because they could not handle going up against it? I have a feeling that “some” of the people who complained about this were a little to worried over their stats, and not as concerned with enjoying the game and playing as a team member.
I am not saying that any cheat or hack should be used. The game should be used as it was designed without modification.
Here is an example of something which I think would fall into the truly grey area however, I know someone who has a small dot of tape in this monitor right where the cross hairs are. That way even when firing AT he can aim when un zoomed… now is that a cheat or hack? Or is it just a valid edge such as a good joystick for airplanes?
I’m not saying that there are not aspects to the game which shouldn’t be improved upon, but if there is an asset available, only a true “noob” wouldn’t use it to their advantage and to help their team win.
With all that being said I think it would be good, and helpful to DICE, if there was a specific area where these topics could be argued in a point-counter point pros/cons section. Which was monitored a little bit and rants were simply deleted. Something well organized, perhaps a forum category which had 1 thread per game design topic, was moderated, ,etc.
There are a lot of bright talented players out there who could help game design evolve – which is what we would all really like isn’t it? And let’s face it, so far BF2 is easily one of the best games designed right now in the FPS realm.
