You're right - there's no skill in simply clicking twice, and placing artillery. However - there is skill in knowing where to put an arty strike for it to be effective. Just like shooting somone at 2 meters doesn't take much skill, whereas shooting somone from 200 meters take considerably more skill. The commander who simply artys a flag is going to get a few kills, but the commander who artys a strategic location to stop a flag being capped, or help his team advance is going to get a better result. Not every aspect of every game is going to require skill.

The artillery should take longer to reload, and should only fire 4 shots at the same place...at the moment it covers too large an area and the likelihood of avoiding it is minimal.

The UAV and scan should not detect snipers. It pretty much ruins the point of being a sniper.

Otherwise, I feel the Commander position adds a whole new section to the game. They shouldn't remove it completely; just dampen down the asset power.

I wouldn't have a problem with it only firing x amount of shells, if those shells were at least accurate.

As it is though often they'll land all around a target and not hit it

I think the position has already been nerfed enough when they took away the scoring system and made it based on your team, any commander could, if he wanted, do nothing the whole game, and get the same score at the end as a very active, very good commander, which is wrong in my books.

At least with the point system whether you did well or not was entirely up to yourself and could show to some degree how good you were at the role, rather than just how good your team is

They should've scuttled commander and enriched the squad-based features and squad leader capabilities.

If you want to take away the commander's assets, blow them up!

              My thoughts exactly.

There is a lot more to the guns than point and click just as there is much more to arty use than point and click.

Only to be killed by the other team, and have their commander drop a supply crate with magical repairing abilities next to the destroyed assets.

                Yeah, real good...

yah, point & click may describe the nub way to use it, but to be able to predict where a squad, armor colum, etc is goind before it gets there isn't the easiest of tasks.. Factor in the map size (yes, distance plays into how long it strikes) and we're not talking an easy task to peg 3 guys capping a flag.

Try playing CO in a match, and trying to hammer their apc & tank, camping a street corner and moving 50 yards east & west. Not to mention that if they have anyone near your arty, they'll hear it and tell their troops its on its way. After a while, you can "feel" when arty is on its way, period.

Now factor that in and try hitting the enemy and not your team on a regular basis

It works pretty well, the commander has to use crates to repair the assets and you can resupply yourself from the crate he drops. One good Spec Ops player can take up a lot of the commander's time and assets.

No matter what you are doing you are going to be killed by the other team, blowing up assets is an honorable way to go. So honorable that EA/DICE gave points to it in a patch - I believe the only change to the combat scoring system since the game came out.

                      Re: Commander Begone....

commanding is easy if you look at it from a purely button pusher angle....winning for the team and with the team is a skill. I have played too many rounds where teamwork is absent and co-operation is nonexistant. A good Commander pulls togeather the lone wolves and unites the effort to work as a union/team rather than a bunch of rank monkeys.

                        Re: Commander Begone....

Commander mode is for someone who sucks at the game and has nothing better to do but setup and drop arty on everyone enemy. In most cases no one is playing commander because they enjoy it, or to help their team. Artying one person is lame, artying the carriers lame.. I hate it, begone commander mode!

                          Re: Commander Begone....

This is supposed to be a reality-based game, isn't it? The truth is, in life and in war there are 'commanders', both good and bad. We seldom get to choose these people, as you can in BF2. Most of the time we just have to live (or die) with them. I think the Commander function is often seen as a boring one. I've been on many servers where people don't want to be the Commander, they want to be in the thick of battle all the time. The role of Commander then falls to someone who's chasing a badge, a ribbon or a medal. Sometimes it even falls to guy who then spends the rest of the game being told he's crap and faces countless mutiney votes. Good Commanders are hard to find.

As for the functionality of the Commander's tools; I love artillery, and find UAVs & supply drops essetial to supporting the troops properly. The problems for the Commander are: a) that people are often slow to organize into squads or insist on playing "lone wolf", b) too many snipers on a team, c) few people who want a command structure where someone tells them how to play their game. The "I paid for this game and I'm going to play how I want to play" mentality. These people rapidly become irrelevent to both the Commander and the Squads in the same game.

So, I applaud all of you that do play cooperatively and work with a Commander, who supports you as you want to be supported. Be grateful for them and thank them when they've done a good job.

At the end of the day my frank opinion is that it is the players, not the game or the Commanders that have the most obvious limitations.
