Never encountered it personally. But I think it can be explained.
You bailout into water but do not deploy your parachute, therefore when you hit the water the game probably still thinks you are falling (this would also explain the second case where you touched the land and died, the game mechanics still thought you were falling and when you touched the land it treated you as if you had hit it at full speed from a freefall thereby killing you).
That's my lame hypothesis anyway.Comment
