Tactics and Strategies from The Art of War

This is for all you serious Battlefield 2 players, Clans, and tactics lovers. This is simply the beginning of a guide which I am writing for Battlefield 2. I picked up Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" the other day and realized how much could be applied to Battlefield 2. This guide is probably more for clans but I think individual players could get something out of this. I wrote the plain text and the italics is passages from the book. Before I write the rest of the guide I would like to get some feeback on if it's good or bad, what could be added or changed, and if I should even continue writing the guide. The guide contains passages from "The Art of War", a book on warfare tactics and strategies over 2000 years old. The book is still avidly studied by military leaders worldwide and it's principles still put to use. Let me know how you like the guide and check out http://www.sonshi.com for the book.

Dude... I read the Art of War when I was 12.

    :p

Try the Book of 5 Rings, sometime. Much cooler.

Edit: Brain dead here ATM, apparently. 5 Rings, I read almost anually, Art of war I've read twice. Musashi owns Sun Tzu

LOL me too. I read it for the first time when I was 16, and I've read it about 20 times since then.

Simply reading the book won't make you any better. The challenge is to understand it's pricinples and use them.

Re: Tactics and Strategies from The Art of War

Good idea in principle - but comparing the Art of War and summarizing how it can work for BF2 is .... pointless?

Sun Tsu didn't have UAV's and Radar scans that his troops could not hide from. Also - he didn't have members of his own army killing members of his own army in order to get a plane or tank.

N00bs would not last in a real war - but yet they prosper on public servers.

Yes some clans may in fact benefit if they took the time to read Art of War, or understand the concepts...but for the most part these concepts do not apply to the random crap that goes on in game.

I applaud your effort - but IMHO - save your time and energy for something that would reward yourself more. I don't think the crowds here are going to appreciate your summaries/comparisons as much as you want them to. You asked for opions - you just got mine.

If you don't think any of 'The Art of War' can be applied to BF2 then you are either extremely skeptical, exremely ignorant, or failing to care about the larger strategies of the game. Whichever it is, I pity you.

Papalatiolais, nice guide. I really wish more people would stop to think about tactics and strategy instead of contantly trying to turn the game into a simple battle of mouse-eye coordination. I bookmarked it and will read it over the next few days. Good job. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed the guide. I'm going to continue to work on it seeing as I only got through about 5 chapters of the book's passages.

I commend you for being polite with your criticism (many people on this forum have trouble doing that). Sun Tzu's work is read about and applied today in warfare even though advanced weaponry and technologies exist that did not in Tzu's time.

In the span of a game it would be pretty d*** hard to apply these principles and probably impossible. Normally games are loosely organized and it's more about the individual than the team. You are exactly right about the fact of these applications in normal games. Clan matches are the exact opposite of this however, which gives logical reason for the application of these strategies and tactics. Teamwork is more prevalent in a clan match along with organization (assuming the clan memebers have brains) making for a perfect environment to apply these tactics and strategies. Clan matches should be tactics and strategy games!

EDIT - In the second paragraph I was referring to passages in the guide on teamwork, commanding, and other forms of leadership. In the updated version of the guide there should be more strategies that can be applied by an individual in normal games.

The fact that the Art of War is applicable to a war game is undeniable. If you play BF2 and are reading the Art of War and can not understand the principles of the book as they relate to the game, I'm afraid you're hopeless anyway.

I don't see it being particularly applicable with teams full of individuals. Maybe a clan could get a little something out of it, but I'm sure application may be fairly obvious from normal gameplay.

Get your people to properly utilize the combined arms available, and then you'll really have something.

Even if you're on your own in a team of individuals (i.e. a bunch of headless chickens), there are still plently of tactics, strategies and choices available to you. Some careful thought, cunning ideas and plans can help you really hamper the enemy team. And that's where something like the Art of War might help you.

Re: Tactics and Strategies from The Art of War

The tactics mentioned in the art of war should already come second nature to any expieranced FPS gamer. Even if they have never heard of the book. It is always better to attack down hill from an enemy, and dagerous to attack uphill. When you're out numbered you dont attack, you retreat.

If anything you should get more apreciation out of The Art of War by playing BF2, rather then the other way around.

One - and then you put the bag of poo by the door, ring the doorbell, and run.
