    2nd thoughts about post-1.2 AA

    Hi there,

After 1.2 came out with its effective AA I've read a lot of whining about how deadly and unfair it is. I wonder if any of you experienced helo/jet whores actually changed your minds after last 2 weeks of flying.

I did. Frankly, I cant see much of a difference in my efficiency as a dedicated helo pilot. When I fly with my gunner we just take out AA sites first, then jeeps, then tanks. Run&repair when even slightly damaged. Apart from Gulf of Oman, where it is now even more suicidal to attack middle-coast bases, our tactic didnt change much. It is a bit more difficult but I would absolutely not say helos are weak, or for instance weaker than tanks. Still deadly, thank you. The only problem is with the jets, but the balance has been kept and as long as I have a jet pilot on my team I dont worry about enemy jets more than pre-patch - where evading was not that difficult (unless you had a master jet whore on the opposite side, like for instance a guy called Phoenix|Bird - which I remember very well even though I only met him once :-).

Share your thoughs. For me the patch - heli/aa wise - was ok. Queues to heli pads are a lot shorter, and sometimes the helo just stands there waiting for me ;-)

    best,

i dont mind it much, it just means those who are good at flying will be flying, and those who arent good, well, the plane will respawn in flash once they get shot down. i dont mind it

I still think it should be possible to evade missiles, provided you know where they're firing from, but the new AA missiles aren't overpowering...except in the case of planes. I kind of feel sorry for helicopter pilots with fighters flying every which way.

I never really spazed about the 1.2 missile tracking. Now that things have settled, I've found my interest in flying planes has increased a bit.

Attackchopper's haven't changed a whole lot for me. I've always flown really low and got used to having to dodge groundfire from .50 cal, tanks, and APCs. Haven't had much of a problem with AA since by the time they can lock me, I'm already in gun range and my gunner spanks 'em before my flares finish falling. Planes rarely are a problem when you're at sub-rooftop level and using cover. Still die more, but I feel less cheesy flying.

Blackhawking tactics is about the biggest personal impact, not because of missiles, but because of the M134 nerfage. They simply aren't very effective support platforms anymore. I've had to adapt to using them strictly as transports and mobile spawing platforms. That's kinda a shame. There were balance issues before, but blackhawking was one of the most teamwork intensive elements in the game. I would liked to have seen the other transport weapons get ramped up, rather than the Hawk getting nerfed... but, whatever. It's not that big a deal.

I haven't tried the new mini-guns; have they really been nerfed that bad?

            Yup.

They're direct fire weapons now. Before, they had a bit of splash damage on 'em.

Since 1.2 I've bravely walked through BH fire and came out just fine several times. The other night, playing on Mash, I was on the hill rooftop. The BH came up, turned sideways and opened up on my postion. Before, this ment death. This time, I calmly went prone and killed everyone in the back of the hawk with pickshots.

            :\

Not really. Fact of the matter is, flares do absolutely NOTHING against AA missiles. Not to mention their tendency to circle around the chopper and do a bunch of crazy ass ****. The AA has ruined the air game, even making it worse than it was before. Only time you can use AA is before they shoot to drop the lock on. It is actually better to not use your flares in some instances!

                  I second that.

Check out this vid done by Lugal http://www.secretsofbattlefield.com/Insaneaa.wmv It shows the AA going through the flares and hitting the heli and other insane AA from zig zagging to spirals.

I can still have good games in the heli but it depends on the opposition. If there is anyone even half decent in the plane then 1-2 burst from the mg and your dead or they get you with the insane AA. If the ground forces are manning the AA on the beach front on Oman its next to impossible to even reach land before you die, same as on Dalian.

                    Wrong, wrong, wrong.

                    You are simply wrong.

There IS a 1 in 7 chance that a missile will ignore flares and go for you. This is expected behaviour do to the way flares work. You drop 'em and suddenly where there was one thing to track, there's now 7 (6 flares and you). The missile is forced to choose one.

I have yet to see any spaztic behaviour in missile flight. I'm sure there really is a remaining bug, but it's less common than people make out.

Please, if you're going to post, don't just hand out BS.
                    K?

Have you watched that vid I posted?

What I find is 2 things. Either 1 of the AA goes for the flares and the other goes straight through the flares or the AA goes for the flares zig zags in between them, then slingshots out to hit the heli still. If you fly low the flares seem to not even trick the AA or as soon as the flares hit the ground the AA continues on to hit the heli.

i watched the vid, and i have never seen anything like that in game. not when i shoot AA, when someone else shoots it, or when someone shoots it at me.

I haven't seen the spiral AA.... yet.. But I have seen all the rest from the zig zag AA, to AA going through flares and still hitting, both on the firing and receiving end.

Yup, I've seen that vid plenty o times. I've come to take everything I see posted with a big fat gain of salt, tho. I tried doing the missile at the oil dericks thing lots and never managed to get anything other than the missile hitting the flames and exploding.

I'm going from personal experiance and what I know of the game's code (which is frankly fragmentary).

I don't doubt at all that there's some bugs in there. The zig-zagging is something I just haven't seen on the field yet.

What I have seen is plenty of my own missiles being tossed off by flares and my flares saving my arse.
