the game goes so smoothly when you have a commander that knows what hes doing. you emerge from a tank battle to see a supply crate floating down beside you and you didnt even ask, he directs squads to objectives, targets artillery properly with a min of TKs, etc.
ive played many rounds where we had a commander that just didnt cut it. never any supply crates even if you begged/yelled for them, killed more friendlies with arty than enemies (the worst is when your squad tears through over a dozen enemies, gets to the flag and starts capping it only to be bombed into oblivion by your idiot commander), the list ges on. while these commanders werent good ones, none ever really stood out in my mind until last night.
im playing as USMC on karkand, and every 2 min theres a mutiny vote for the commander. several times i die at my OWN SPAWN before i can take a single step because our commander arty'd our own spawn. i was driving an APC around a bit and not once did he drop a supply crate anywhere. i noticed people yelling for repairs/supplies, and directly asking for them from the commander, and since they didnt come i figured i wouldnt bother even asking.
i get blown up by a spec ops, respawn at the USMC base to find the commander - a colonel, Chopper_Charlie - sitting in an APC. all 5 supply crates are dropped next to him. i figure it was an accident and he might be too stupid to just destroy them, so i blow them up with my APC and the next time i respawn at the base theyre all right there beside him again. no enemy sppec ops was destroying our assets or anything - he just sat in the APC with all 5 supply crates around him.
next round starts, i spawn as a medic at the spawn by the hotel, my friend spawns as an engy back at the USMC base and gets into the tank as a gunner. he notices Chopper_Charlie is sitting in the drivers seat, while commander. keep in mind that it is general etiquette, as well as a strict server rule that commanders cannot get in armor or aircraft. Chopper_Charlie backs up the tank to the edge of the map bounds and kills my friend in the gunners seat.
the server allows 3 punished TKs max, then kick/bans for a round - otherwise everyone would have went to town on this guy regardless of the consequences. suffice to say there was a lot of voting and cussing to no avail - you can hardly ever get a vote to succeed on a pub server since half the people dont even know WTF is going on.
the commander then took the tank and tried to drive it so far out of bounds that it would be irretrievable. luckily some AT guy took it out with a few long-range shots. we actually managed to win the round, and something like the 30th kick vote actuallly succeeded, and then he proceeded to talk $hit for the rest of the night.
the vote system is so depressing sometimes. the default threshold should be 1/3 of the players. half the players wont vote anyways, and of the other half some dont want him kicked because he is helping the enemy. if you can get 1/3 of a 50-64 player server to agree on anything then its a safe bet that that person deserves a kick. getting 30 people in a server to vote 'yes' to a kick will never succeed. as someone pointed out last night, a kick vote against osama bin laden would fail.
what are your worst experiences with commanders?
