    Re: Is AT balanced?

I think it is balanced. Rocket for long range and sometimes close. Dao for close.

Though it's pretty funny when you're in an armored column of at least 2 with engis inside and mb a box nearby. Not even 2 AT firing at a tank or apc can really do anything to it. Yesterday, I saw 1 tank and 2 apcs self repairing next to each other and numerous rockets kept hiting them and they would auto-repair to full in 2-3 secs.

Edit: Need to fix rockets going through things though

erm, with the smalllest area-of-effect of any explosive in the game. grenade is 9m, GL is 5m, AT is 2m. you can snipe people with them if you are good, but it can hardly be relied on as a 1-shot kill CQC weapon.
also to hit someone with them you have to guide the rocket. if you fiire while zoomed in, the act of holstering the AT rocket will move the point of impact over several metres as the rocket follows the crosshair of the holstering weapon. so to snipe someone with them you have to stand there and hold the xhair over them - which gives them ample time to kill you with just about anything.
yes, the AT rocket can be adapted to take out infantry in some situatiions by skilled AT users. but lets not call it an awesome anti-infantry weapon - its nothing of the sort. anti-infantry id take grenades over it anyday, and every other class has those.

the DAO is a good CQC weapon. its not the BEST overall CQC weapon, and it absolutely useless in ranges outside CQC range. yes you CAN hit someone at medium range, but only if they are a noob. if they go prone they can waste you long before you can kill them at med range with the DAO or even pistol.

"3 shots are enough to take a tank out, just aim at the front or at the wheels.
the AT class has 5 rockets, 1 shotgun, 1 SMG so it's quite well balanced"

that assumes that the tank is not being repaired and is being driven by a poor driver that lets you take 3 well-placed shots on him.
i play as an engineer in armor all the time and i almost never get taken out by AT. even in an APC. i only die to tanks, spec ops and engineers.

1.2 really screwed with AT. it is nearly impossible now for a solo AT guy to take out a good tank or APC driver. in a tank i should fear AT... but i dont, theyre a joke.

again the only reason i play is because it is IMMENSELY satisfying to succceed with AT when a round goes well and you take out several armor-whores, snipe some people wiith the AT rocket, and blow them away CQC with the DAO. but even after a great round as AT, if i had spent the same energy as mediic or support instead my score would have been double.

the problem isnt that AT is weak, so much, its that it is the lowest scoring class in general and that makes people not want to play it - even when there are 2 APCs and a tank raping your teammates on karkand. if they made armor drivers take 1-2 bars of damage from each AT rocket then it would shorten the runs of some repairing armor-whores as well as raise the scores of all AT players by a little, and make the class less frustrating. i dont think it would imbalance it at all, and it would make it more realistic.

Blackhearted, you have a really good orginal post.

Very well said, and this is the reason I dont play anti-tank. The reason the rockets aren't stronger is for balance. Not for the class, but for the tank people.

If they made the rockets any stronger, than you would have a billion people playing the anti-tank class, and no one ever wanting to ride in a tank because as we all know, its not too hard to hit the tank, its hard to hit them 3 times.

Its also for the clan matches. When we are in a squad we usually got 2 anti-tank guys, and they alone can take out any tank pretty quickly. Imagine if they got stronger.

As a lone wolf, yes, I agree, anti-tank sucks, but a lot of the other classes do too.

In a match they wouldn't last. The only reason why they can dominate in pubs is because there is no communication, which is why pubs suck.

If you find 3-4 guys in a clan on a server (a good clan anyway), they will/should dominate whatever noobs are in those tanks.

I havent played with the AT yet, but if want to play as a god AT, go play BFV. (i know you're not asking for them to unbalance the class, its just that the AT in BFV is uber powerful. They get a SAW and LAW rockets)

thats the problem. people keep saying 'its fine, i take out tanks in 2 shots every time'.
they must be playing against noobs, because any armor-whore worth his salt hardly ever dies to AT alone. perhaps AT might get them if theyre also being fired on by another tank and an AT guy pops up and finishes them off, but solo AT? pfft.
a skilled tank driver has no problem with AT. and even a skilled solo AT cannot take out armor when there is another vehicle beside them repairing faster than they can do damage.

id love to get a really good tank driver in here to tell you guys just what a joke he thinks AT guys are.

yeah, i guess thats the answer. teamwork is, after all, what the game is built upon. i guess i need to find a clan to play with since solo AT is just tooo frustrating and its impossible to organize pubbers.

they could still give us smokes though. it wouldnt imbalance the class, and it would make it easier for us to line up shots on tanks. think about it - tank comes up, all of a sudden a smoke grenade pops iin front of him. an AT guy materialises out of the smmoke and blasts him right in the treads, then ducks back into the smoke. would be pretty sweet and would elevate the class to a whole new level while not imbalancing it.
i RARELY see an assault guy using smokes. perhaps once every 4-5 matches. give alll assault flashbangs as vanilla unlocks, would make that class worth playing again, and give at smokes. we would actually USE them, always. would elevate the BF2 experience for alll classes if more smokes were used.

                  Re: Is AT balanced?

hey, I played my first 10,000 points as AT, because that was the point at which you would gain a second unlock back when the ranks were arranged as such.

I agree that it is even about even with the sniper kit as a low point earner and that it IS very satisfying to kill tanks.

I dont think Vodniiks and Humvees should be able to survive a direct Missle hit either.

But, such is life, its called 'B A L A N C E". there are positives and negatices to each class, and Im glad that they exist. AT is more effective with TEAMWORK. This game is about playing in a squad, not Lonewolfing.

Get in a squad with a supply and a medic and Rock On !

i always play in squads, and they inevitable have medics and support (always support these days).

the point is that even in a squad a single AT cannot take out armor being supported by another tank, or with an engineer or supply crate behind it. even 2 AT cannot put a dent in an armored column driven by engineers, even if they can survive all the fire from 2 APCs and a tank - thats a lot of splash damage.

now that i think about it, grenades would be nice. a good tank driver protects his supply crate, engineer, engy-driven APC or humvee, etc. some grenades would be useful for taking out thet supply crate, humvee or engineer behind the tank that is repairing it.

btw - has there been any news on the P90? are they going to be tweaking it a bit in 1.21? hell, even if they made it as accurate as the default SMGs the sights would make it a viable choice over them for mid-range combat, even though it does less damage. ive been forcing myself to play with the P90 just to see if i can find ONE facet of it thats worth using it for but i cant... it is absolutely worse than the MP5 or default SMGs in every way.

I think the AT class is fine the way it is now. At this point, AT aren't anti-infantry so they don't need a rifle or grenades (smoke or explosive).

Personally, I just like to tone vechiles to see what they'll do. A tone won't give away your position, but it'll make them sweat a bit.

                        Re: Is AT balanced?

AT is a very good class, and you can take out armor with it easely, there are always hiding spot after shooting the armor and then comming back at a diffirent point to shoot the armor .

also, the AT weapon is very good against infantry when you know how to use it, and in close combat when having the DAO , you are UBER .

so, AT is a good class, it can take out armor, jeeps and humvees , infantry at medium to far distance, and very good at close distance.

but at medium to far distance, and you have an assault or medic against you, will will drop, unless it was a noob . but those other classes don't have the advantage of taking out armor or humvees , so it's balanced .

AT is one of those kits that goes from pointless to overpowering when you combine 2-3 players using it.

2 shots to the treads. Most of the advanced AT guys can pull it off 95% of the time.

against noob tank drivers, sure. an experienced tank driver will not let you hit him more than once, let alone twice in the treads.

i supppose if you look at it this way yoou are right:
"AT is one of those kits that goes from pointless to overpowering when you combine 2-3 players using it."
i just wish there was some way to drill that into the heads of most pub players. most are complete idiots. our entire team is being suppressed by 2 APCs and a tank yet i look on the rooster and i am the only AT guy. they keep spawning as medic, support, etc. you can even yell at them 'ffs someone else spawn AT' yet none listen. its like they have some aversion to playing as AT.
perhaps its time i started looking for a clan, or at least played on a clan server and asked them to let me into their AT squad.

"also, the AT weapon is very good against infantry when you know how to use it, and in close combat when having the DAO , you are UBER ."

it can be effective med/far range and somewhat makes up for the lack of aa primary weapon at those ranges. close range, sometimes im getting ready to take a shot at armor and im suprised by infantry running around the corner. i dont have time to switch to the DAO so ill shoot the AT rocket at their feet. 1/2 the time they take no damage at all - the hit detection on the AT rocket is horrid.

i had this funny as hell experience the other night. i was driving a tank on karkand and some PKM-wielding idiot runs into the middle of the street, flops on his belly and starts shooting full auto at my tank with the PKM. i actually let him do it for like 3-4 seconds because i was so in shock that someone could be so stupid. i lined up my turret on him and just watched in amazement....then blasted him 30 feet in the air with a direct shot :)
just goes to show how overpowered the PKM is now... all these PKM-whoring noobs who never once played the support class before 1.2 are so used to the weapon being overpowered they think they can take out tanks with them.
