    Is AT balanced?

ive been playing AT a lot - i made a new character just for AT and even unlocked the pitiful P90. i tried to like the thing - i really did - but it is inferior to the default SMGs in every way.

i am far from an 'expert' AT - either that or people boast far too much in these forums.
i get a tread hit on a tank around 1/3 of the time on a map like karkand. most of the time its far too hectic sprinting into and out of cover in alleys and behind crates on a map like karkand where there is a tank and 2 APCs camping the hotel area. sometimes i am happy to just hit the tank at all and survive, let alone get the perfect hit in the treads.
so either im not a very good AT or people who claim to consistently 2-shot tanks are exaggerating - because against good tank drivers it is near impossible to do consistently. not to mention that 2/3 of the time the tank either has a supply crate behind it or an engineer gunner repairing it, or theres an APC and a tank with engineer drivers side-by-side. there is no way on earth you can take those out with 2 rockets.

anyways, back to the point of this thread:
spec ops, nerfed as it is, is still an easier way of taking out tanks. engineers can now lock down entire areas of maps with mines. both of these classes are more effective at taking out armor.

AT can still be successful, mind you, but it requires a squad of at least 3 AT guys, a support guy (and possibly a medic) working together as a team, and that is very rare. most of the time on a map like karkand i find im the only AT guy trying to hold off the tank and 2 APCs camping the hotel spawn, and everyone else is doing their own thing... and i mainly play on 50-64 player servers.

3/4 of the time when i manage to register a hit on a vodnik or humvee the occupants have time to jump out and sprint away before it blows up. when it is in close-mid range, 1/3 of the time my rockets go right through the vehicle doing no damage at all.
the other night on karkand i was standing in the road and a humvee was speeding towards me - i fired an AT rocket and hit is dead-centre on the grille and it just continued to run me over. the same thing happened a few times with vodniks and the rockets just passed right through.

the class is called ANTI-TANK. it should be, hands-down, the most effective class at taking out armor.

as for the DAO-12 - its not that great. most of the time dolphin-diving PKM wielders in CQC will still take me out, which is bullsh!t. even if i suprise them and get off the first and second round they still have time to flop and kill me in seconds. i would still much rather take a G36E, AK, M16, or just about anything but an SMG over the DAO-12. dont get me wrong its a solid CQC weapon, but it has severe limitations - primarily range.

i still play AT because its a fun class. theres enormous satisfaction in taking out a tank, sniping someone with the AT rocket, or shootiing someone in the face with the DAO. but it is a very *weak* class. 2 other classes take out tanks better than AT, we have limited anti-infantry capabilities, the P90 is a slap in the face, i could go on and on. when i play medic or support i usually lead the round as the 1st or 2nd player. when i switch to AT i can barelly keep a 1:1 kill ratio and am somewhere on the bottom of the list. sure if i just ran around the alleys killing people i could have a better kill ratio, but i spend my time primarily trying to take out armor.

which brings me to another point. you can put 2-3 rockets into a tank and have it smoking and throwing sparks, and another AT guy, tank, assault with GL, grenade spammer, whatever touches the thing and blows it up and you dont even get an assist. AT is the most glory-less class there is: most other classes have a way of racking up points except AT. in the LEAST when you hit a tank with rockets it should take 1-2 bars of health from its occupants. this would give AT a chance at assists, and would also limit the runs of engineer-driven armor supporting themselves in an unkillable regenerating group.

i think with a few tweaks the class could be really well-rounded. give all assault kits flashbangs and give smokes to AT where theyd actually be USED constantly, and make sense. i could really use smokes to take out tanks. and not just 1, but at least 3. i shelled out $40 for spec forces, mainly for the flashbangs and G36E, and i wouldnt be upset at all if even vanilla unlock assault kits got flashbangs. assault is an underplayed class since the PKM buff anyways, there is virtually no reason to play assault anymore. a small tweak like that would 'fix' things quite a bit and add more versatility and playability to both classes.

even though it is one of the weakest classes ill still play it because it is a challenge and thus immensely satisfying when you do welll in a round with it. but id really like to hear from someone who thinks that AT is balanced with the other classes and 'fine the way it is'.

    Re: Is AT balanced?

Shooting a rocket into the grill of a 100% healthy Vodnik or Humvee no longer gives you an instant kill. What you'll do is drain it to like 3% health and set it on fire. Jeeps and lighter vehicles are no problem, but these vehicles got a tiny bit more armor. This gives the drivers a chance to jump out and run (which it should IMHO). You can't get all Rambo on these vehicles anymore.

Personally I think the AT class is underpowered. You get a crap collection of weapons (still not as bad as engineer) and get a weak rocket launcher. You're better off targeting Cobras and Blackhawks than you are targeting ground vehicles.

      Re: Is AT balanced?

Yeah I agree but I made a post like this on bf2s.com and everyone told me I was crazy. I think AT deserves a bit more punch especially after the last patch (jump+shoot was core to DAO CQC combat imo.. they really need to make it a little more accurate if you cant jump with it). Smokes would be interesting but honestly I think I'd rather have grenades; too many times I just get overwhelmed by more infantry than I could kill just because I couldn't pop a well placed grenade up to a roof or behind some cover. I think it's funny that medic gets grenades and AT doesn't. Vehicles being worth more points would be helpful also. I think 2 points for the pilot + 1 for each passenger would be nice. Maybe a bonus point if it was a heavily armored vehicle (ie blackhawk or tank).

Having bugs with AT rockets has always been a problem, moreso with the latest patch. They need to fix the DAO's bug too -- ever noticed you reload more clips than could fit in the gun?

        Re: Is AT balanced?

I agree the At class is a bit underpowered, I do think that the DAO is a good weapon though. When ever I use it I always seem to win with it, if I see some one at long range I run behind a wall go prone and wait for them to run by and pop 3 shells into them, but the AT rocket needs a fix, like you said it should be the best thing at taking out tanks, and usually if a tank is camping a base and Im going to spawn I would much rather go stealth and use specops and kill him instantly rather then play cat and mouse with him behind a wall.

AT is fine. DAO rocks, you are too slow maybe? gotta click like a mad man when there is some1 in front of you! :P
I have no problems to get Gold medal as AT, even though you hardly get any teamwork points using it ?

            Re: Is AT balanced?

I think if they fixed AT rockets they'd be fine; some tweaks to the other areas of the class would be nice. By fix I mean fix the bugs, not neccesarily improve them.

              Re: Is AT balanced?

3 shots are enough to take a tank out, just aim at the front or at the wheels.
the AT class has 5 rockets, 1 shotgun, 1 SMG so it's quite well balanced

                Re: Is AT balanced?

AT rockets are still one-shot kills against enemy infantry, let's not forget that. :) The class is fine, imo. On many maps it's definately one of the most versatile classes.

                  Re: Is AT balanced?

I'd just like the rockets fixed and either grenades or smokes added to keep the class on par with the utility of other classes.

standard humvees are not armored. since Kosovo, the army began outfitting a part of their humvee fleet with an Armor Survivability Kit (ASK), which is 2000 lbs of armor skinning and ballistic windows. nowadays in the middle east most humvees are of the 'up-armored' variety, outfitted with ASKs or on loan from the army. an up-armored humvee (and perhaps a vodnik) will protect against small-arms fire and shrapnel, and give some defence against IEDs and mines. they have reinforced steel plating underneath that will allow the occupants to survive driving over an 8-lb landmine beneath the engine or 4-lb beneath the cargo area.

an anti-tank rocket is a shaped charge designed to penetrate heavy armor. they are designed to take out a tank. (an ERYX for example can penetrate 900mm of heavy armor). a shaped charge creates a high-velocity jet of molten metal that then penetrates the armor.
now imagine one hitting the door of a humvee, with occupants inside. do you think they would simply hear a 'beeping' sound and have ample time to bail out completely unscathed? a hit by an AT rocket to a humvee would instantly kill or severely #$@% up any occupants unfortunate enough to be inside. even if they survived they would be severely injured and disoriented and would probably have to be evacced to a hospital immediately. in-game this would be represented by 'death'.

                      Re: Is AT balanced?

Well since this game has almost zero basis in reality, other than weapon and vehicle choices, your point is moot.

Also, don't forget that in Blackhawk Down, they took an RPG in the passenger side door and the passenger died but everyone else survived, i.e. the vehicle didn't magically explode by taking a rocket to the door. Now, a Hummer taking a rocket to the grill...it probably should instantly explode but it won't.

i love the at class, as long as you have a support/crate nearby

the rockets are greats agaisnt infantry and on large maps i am always AT just because there are always a plethra of vehicals to aim at

but i would love some grenades

As soon as they get rid of the server-side management of rockets (which is what's causing rocket lag), everything will be right with the AT class again.

A few days ago I was in a 24/7 kark and I spent 5 rounds doing nothing but AT'ing people. I had consistent 2:1 k/d's and even pulled a 3:1. lol

It's a good way to get rid of those guys that just use the support kit. They have to go prone most of the time so it's an easy shot.

For AT to be more balanced I think they should give them assault rifles and like someone stated earlier, smoke nades
