Advanced Attack Chopper Techniques to overcome the patch

I wanted to start a thread for some advanced attack chopper techniques that perhaps some people are using to overcome the patch.

Dont hate us because we fly choppers - I find im good at it and enjoy flying. I like to help achieve the objectives of my team including taking out any spotted armor (although this is rare i ususally spot it myself lol) or capping flags for the team.

Some good tips for a flag cap - although i don't think this should be the primary use for the chopper.

    - There is a cool technique by doing fast spins just above the flag that i've gotten down pretty good. What you do is bank the chopper - i use a joystick - and pull up putting the chopper into a fast spin. (not just a hovering level rotation but having the chopper actually flying tight loops basically in circles) The trick is maintaining altitude and keeping the spins tight (and not getting too dizzy lol). This will prevent missles from hitting you and it's tough to shoot you down. Try it out at altitude to practice the spin - i find it works pretty well.

    - Obviously, when at a lonely flag w/o much fear from the air, having the gunner hop out will increse your cap time - just pick em up again. Remember the chopper is much more effective with a good gunner.

Also, you prob know this, but...

    - Since the patch keep your chopper repaired when necessary perhaps get the commander to drop you a crate off to the side of the map (in the middle) this will help commute time back & forth to the base)

    - A good pilot is simply lining up shots for his gunner - keep it steady when the gun is going to be used and line up the missle shots effectively. I think we all know how this is done...

    - The best way to deal with enemy choppers is a stand-off tv missle shot. A duel with a chopper can be a waste and your advantage is really lost - try to see the enemy chopper first and hover at stand-off range and let your gunner try a few missle shots B4 goin' in guns blazing.

If you know of some other cool things to try that havent been seen on this forum 100 times - EX: ADVANCED TECHNIQUES - post 'em here - im curious to see how us chopper pilots are coping with the changes in the latest patch and could use all the tips I can get!!!

Not majorly constructive but it still infuriates me when I get a gunner who doesn't TV anything!! Chain-gunning a tank is inviting death.

I'm glad I've got that off my chest :)

I prefer flying solo, so I am able to get rid of locks from AA and planes using fastswitch technique...

About the gunner stepping out for faster flag caps, true, but I usually then switch to gunner so I can use the MG to cover the gunner who stepped out...

You could say, why don't you get out then, and leave the gunner in..?
well... I am a chopper whore... I don't step out

Wait, explain to me this "fastswitch" technique? So you switch seats mid flight? And how does this cancels the lock-on? LOL! Isn't that technique almost as dangerous as the actual missile lock?

Yeah im curious how the "fastswitch" works

Ive tried to gun w/o a pilot before but usually lose control pretty quickly - I had a **** once tk me for the chopper on Dalien at the Waterfront flag and the I watched the bitch go up really high into a hover and tv missle the sht out of the chopper pad at the foot of the valley and scored alot of points raping that base - what a bastard lol.

            But Yeah explain the "fastswitch"....

I usually suicide the helo when the gunner sits there spraying his chaingun at armor.... I just can't stand it. Its all about keeping distance and tv guiding everything before they know what in the world even happend..

Re: Advanced Attack Chopper Techniques to overcome the patch

I will echo the sentiments felt by many and say that I have also grown tired of flying with an unknown gunner or pilot.

I've gotten so good at flying and gunning by myself that unless I have a wicked pilot or gunner with me, I don't even want anything to do with the helo: it's just depressing to have a straight up shot on armor or flying coffins, only to see your gunner start a machine gun rain instead of the perfect TV shot you set him up for...

It's also very depressing to repeatedly spot armor and helos, only to have your pilot ignore the spots or worst, not realize the chopper is on our A$$. :P

                ------------

On topic, here's my advanced technique of the day:

It's difficult to explain, but it comes in use during circle-strafing operations. Sometimes, you or your gunner will miss the intended target and require another pass, which usually involves completing the circle and resuming fire in the appropriate angle range: not so with the following technique.

Similar to the flag spinning technique, it involves aborting your circle-strafing right after your missed target, performing the spin to 'return a few moments back during your strafing' to resume a little before the target was acquired.

It usually ends up saving you a lot of time, but makes the gunner sick and disoriented if he's not expecting that level of ownageness. :)

I would have just used two words for this quide......Fly Low

                  Then a P.S. Repair...Repair...Repair...Repair.

                  Any questions:guns:

Re: Advanced Attack Chopper Techniques to overcome the patch

Ok on the matter of avoiding AA post 1.2...

Since the recent patch i find myself leaning on the "s" key a hell of a lot, i'm using anything and everything to get cover for me and my bird, bulidings, rivers, bridges and sticking close by an oil field helps.

Ghost Town is almost unflyable, i cant stay up for more than 4-5 minutes, you have to use the oilfield to escape for cover.
Surge is ok if you have a decent gunner, Mass Destruction also.

                    On the subject of GUNNERS....

I wish i could say that the standard of gunner has risen but it hasnt, i still get more chaining the armour than using the guided TV.

I get around this by firstly making sure were in the same squad, me in his squad or him into mine, whichever as long as we can voip.

No matter what the language barrier is i only need to say ONE thing ...."TV - TV".

When they get their first TV hit they hardly hit the chain again.

Seriously though i can take a noob up in the air and if he listens to me he can medal up on a 64 server and ABSOLUTLEY cripple the enemy armour.

A gunner has 3 jobs in my chopper.

                    1. Open up the chain on all enemy infantry.
                    2. Spot any armour/vehicles/choppers, make this more of a priority than chaining infantry.
                    3. As soon as you hear the words "TV" you right click quick.

Re: Advanced Attack Chopper Techniques to overcome the patch

attack helis dont capture flags, or they die. further more, thats a misapproriation of combat support.

-go into an unpowered orbit when encountering an enemy troop formation.
-use the enviornment to your advantage, attack helis are highly suseptable to aa/50cal/jets, so pick your fights and use the enviornment to peekaboo your enemy.
-know where the enemy aa is, hit it just for good measure.
                      -fly low, real low
-get a crew of two engineers and you dont need a supply crate, and you can also give repair support to assets and armor.
-theres two aiming reticles, one is the cross and the other is the two lines across the middle, get your targets between the two to line it up for your gunner, also lead moving targets like other helicopters, the key is making your gunner adjust as little as possible.
-here is the most important one, get a mic, and make the gunner on your squad, dont leave the airport without a squadie as a gunner, communication is essential to attack heli success.
-flare at will, but wait for a solid lock, and stay out off aa range, when you know an enemy jet is on your tail, do a hard turn, no special aerobatics, just a hard turn.

"Advanced Techniques" to some, it's just plain common sense to me. Too bad most gunners I've had the displeasure of flying around, don't get it.

Re: Advanced Attack Chopper Techniques to overcome the patch

I only slightly disagree with what roger smith has to say. I do rarely use the attack chopper to capture a flag. Mostly this is when it is a completely unguarded flag at the edge of a map.

I also like being a engineer while flying and having the gunner be support. When I land next to the unguarded flag I have the gunner hop out just long enough to drop an ammo bag. Then he jumps back in and I jump out to do repairs. This accomplishes a faster flag cap, stops me from ever having to go back to the main base or wasting a supply drop, and keeps the chopper from being stolen by any enemies that I didn't spot. A good commander helps alot because he can spot any incoming enemies or unguarded flags for me.

if i was in a jet/attack chopper on the enemy team, you would be dead. capping helis are sitting ducks.

this is definitly valid, although only for really big maps, otherwise two eng is better.
