    Manned Artillery

I dont know if anyone had ever posted this idea....there are so many entries to read....Anyway, why not have the artillery manned? It is the only fixed weapon on the game that is not manned. You can man the TOW, ground AA, the machine guns, the AA/CWIS on the carrier...So, why not man the arty? The operator would have only the map screen that the commander has....it would show the exact update on the battlefield as the commander. The operator would not have scan, UAV or spotting capability, but would be able to see what the commander has on his map. The commander and squad leaders could still call for the arty shot, and the operator would either comply or not....you know some folks would do their own thing, that part would be frustrating Im sure. It would have to fall under the uncap rule so that opposing forces could not use both. The points could be set as a growing percentage like the engineer repairing a vehicle....so only a successful strike, blowing up troops or occupied vehiles, would build the percentage and once to 100%, an artillery point or team point could be awarded....the process would then reset and be repaeatble. The points could be increased to 2, more than that would be insane. Scaling back on the number of rounds that strike would be good and keep the same reload times or shorten it by a couple of milliseconds at best. Remove the capability of reparing with the supply box...this would open up a decent job for the engineers...the repair points for damaged artillery would remain the same. Make it a ground target just like the other fixed positions

Now, some of the down falls would be....folks who would not want to be team players and just shoot where they want to. It would be stupid, but Im sure some folks would try to exploit having a Spec Ops guy take the negative points for team vehicle damage by blowing it up and have a buddy as an engineer repair it....it is human nature to pick something apart like that.

    So, what do you think?

I think its a good idea, but there are some problems that come up. Also the arty would not be as effective and would not get as much damage as the combined effect of all the arty.

I still think the timer for artillery should be increased. As it is, every minute, you have the hand of god falling on your head...

The idea would be to make it a two gun system, not just one. This way you would have some punch to the attack, but not arty falling for 15 seconds like with the current 3 gun system on most maps.

I like that manned arty idea , i dont agree with the timing change though. as far as the arty time being increased ive noticed since upgrading to this fx sound card a couple months back i can hear when the enemy arty is coming. well i can hear when its being shot off. im talking about a really far distance. if im really far i can hear a rumbling pop pop pop so i usually tell my squad mates or i run for cover myself. you can also tell where the arty is headed if the gun is visible. it pretty much will turn and aim or ( if shooting straight up ) will be soon raining on your spec ops ass trying to c4 it. ofcourse i get arty dropped on me all the time but if you really dont like the arty just go c4 it......

When i 1st heard about BF2 in developement, i hoped that they would have arti like they have in DC, but was i wrong lol. I found it much more fun like arti in DC. Even if they had fixed arti guns, & a soldier entered them & then would look on a radar screen & it would flash where the arti was required you would then fire your gun & hope to get the right spot. Thats what i was hoping for.

If you want manned arty, just reinstall BF:V and jump in the tank thingy that had it. :)

As far as listening for it, when we play together on our server, we can usually control commander. What I have told our commander types to do is when zoomed out, click on their arti area. You pick up the sound from that area as if you were there. They can let us know when it goes off. If we just got to a flag and are turning it, he can let us know to run for cover. :-]

wouldnt work, afterall who wants to sit on fixed arty miles away form the action all round? Other than stat padders perhaps?

                    Re: Manned Artillery

I think the artillary should be manned but only in a certain way. Have it like real artillary where there is a shelter with mapping equipment etc. Then have a computer underneath the shelter where you can hit e to use. From there you would have the same view as the commander but just a little arrow to point where to fire the artillary.

That way it would be easier to find the teams commander(he would most likely have to stay near the artillary). Otherwise he would have to tell someoen where the artilllary needed firing at.

The last game I played was entirely based on teamplay and if the team didn't work together you lost plain and simple. That is the one thing I noticed BF2 is missing.

                      Re: Manned Artillery

i think that whenever the arty is fired, a support soldier should have to resupply the guns before the can fire again, even if the timer says they can be fired, the commander has to wait for a support soldier to resupply each individual gun.

and as for them being manned, i think its a good idea, to have it go into the over head map screen, and on that map, it should place an icon on the area where its most likely to hit

i would love that idea...but it would be too popular (why else would ppl be commanders...to fire the aritllery..or get badges) so ppl would be like tking each other for it,,and since its so powerful (im assuming its power will stay the same), u should only get 1point per kill

Perhaps the "manning" part of it could be that the arty required spotters to get a target, otherwise the arty went wild and had just as much chjance of killing your teammates than the enemy.
