    Being Commander !!

I played as commander last night for the very first time.
I found myself hiding and dealing with the commander issues like UAV, Artillery etc etc.

Is this normal or do you commanders still run around shooting things aswell ??

There seems to be lots to do as commander

    Cheers

Commander is the best role to play when eating your dinner, frees up an entire hand :p
If its a nearly empty 64 player server i go and lend a hand where i can (on foot still spamming uav etc as it becomes available). If its a full server there is to much going on and you really must stay in the command screen spotting etc.

IMO a commander needs to hide and constantly be scanning spotting what he needs to spot useing the UAV all the time . You just simply dont have the time to run around and be a good commander no matter what anyone claims .

its not hard, just use T to place uavs and supplies. also, if you're the first one into a flag and some teammates join you, run away from the flag capture radius and run back in because since you dont get 2 points for a flag capture, it will mean that instead of your teammates only getting a capture assits, they get full capture points and therefore helps your score.

          Re: Being Commander !!

          IMO commander should be full-time.
If i play commander i usually spawn at main base as an engineer, so if any cheeky Spec Ops go on an asset destroying mission, i can repair them and deal with the threat.
This is veryrare however as i'm usually the cheeky Spec Ops!
How big was the server? I find it an easier task on a 16 p server, but you won't get the arty scores!

            Re: Being Commander !!

It was an under populated 64 player server.

There wasn't much going on where i was so i decided to lay low and do what i thought was my bit !!
Sending artillery, UAV scanning and supplies.

Okay, glad I was doing what most of you say is right.

            Any other tips

Average of non-zero players remaining at the end of the round or something close to that. This number is doubled if your team wins.

LOL now your opening a can of worms paulwilko

                  Me
If large map and lots of people, then Im the commander 100% unless to defend self and assets or emergency flag cap. In a good server with good Squad teamplay, you will know what squads are doing and what kits what and communicate very effectively.

If its 4:30 am and there is only 18 people on a 64 player server i will mix it up a bit, if on top then I fight and help.

The other side is some think they can do battle and keep track of many people and squads and be an effective commander.

My opionion is that you can not fly and be engaged with enemy air targets and responding to the grunts crying for supplies and scanning for enemy. I always try and give the troops what they need before they know they need it. if they have to request UAV or constante supply drops then your not an effective commander. Even at 4:30 with small amount of players when im trying to fight at same time, i always have to try and figure out who requested supplys at what location, every thing is ready to fire off but im busy trying to take out a tank or something. It can just be too much to try and cover. Im sure that im going to get my butt flamed by the haters, but this is my opion and im no mega expert that many others will claim to be

Providing the person is up to it, I'd rather my commander be active playing. Again, only if they are up to it. As a commander myself, i find im more in "TUNED" to what and where all the stuff should be if im active. IE: supply drops, Uav, and arty.
Anyone know where you can find commander stats and breakdowns? that would be cool. Let me know.

we do NOT allow commanders to be active in game
unless they are repairing or defending the flag
                          commanding is a FULL TIME JOB ! ! ! !!
between assets you are zomming and spotting

                            Re: Being Commander !!

You either suck as a commander, or you dont.
active, or non active. Kicking solely on the basis of a commander being active is lame. In my opinion. YOur server your rules, i both understand and respect that. But at the same time cant get over the fact of how narrowminded that logic is.
Im 99% of the time an active commander. And my team dont lose very often. In fact, i have taken over commander responsibilities from a gravely losing team, and turned the game over, and won it at the end, when it appeared impossible. All while being active. I've even been complimented as to my commanding duties. I've also wanted to take a break from commanding and just play free of the commanding duties, but often get reamed on, to re-claim those duties. All while being active, out there, taking flags, killing guys and basically doing whatever the team needs to do, to win.
Not sit somewheres in a building, deprieving my team of a body. Besides. If its 15 versus 15, and the other commander is a sit and hide.....we now have 15 guys, they 14. Better odds.

                              Re: Being Commander !!

I use to be an exclusivly passive commander, but lately I've been finding myself becoming more active as the situation warrents.

"Tacticly Active" is what I'd call it.
I start by picking my hiding place somewhere close to a vital CP or assets. That way, I know they're never going to be completely ungaurded. If things get hairy enough, I'll do my best to help the grunts by laying in cover fire and workin around the edges, while making damned sure that any assets at my disposal are still being used.

I was commanding on Wake, not long ago, when our airfield got stormed. I tried to warn the team that the CP was in trouble, but the SLs didn't react quickly enough. The flag fell. I was hiding in a dumpster trying to rally the boys to get in there, but the place was perty damned thick with yanks already. Then I noticed none of them had bothed to pick up the tank...

I popped out of the command window after launching a UAV directly overhead and made a break for the tank. Almost got taken out by someone stealing one of our planes as I crossed the runway... then I got spotted, shot twice, and made it into the tank. I had a major kill spree and caused enough havok for my boys to get in there and secure the flag before getting taken out.

Hehe, one of those moments. Very satisfying.
