Just discovered problem in DirectX diagnostic tool

Hey i was just dicken around in the control panel on my computer, and i opened up the directx diagnostic tool and i got this error

" The file directx.cpl is a debug version, which will run slower than the retail version."

And when i look for that file in the list there is a little yellow warning icon... what does it mean, cause i have been having some video issues if that means anything.

oh and im also having an issue where BF2 just WONT start.. i double click the icon and it goes to a black screen for about 3 seconds, and then back to the desktop, i used to play BF2 alot and then i kept getting these stupid issues and now the game doesnt even run. I have NEVER paid money for a game that requires sooooooooo many system resources in my entire life

Hmm. Not sure about the DirectX problem you're having. Try uninstalling BF2, and reinstalling in Safe Mode. To access safe mode, press F8 when booting up the PC. Then, install the game and patch it to 1.2. Be warned, it will take slightly longer to install in safe mode. If it doesn't work, I don't know what else to try.

Just delete the file. It's a DX tweaking control panel that you probably download at some point. It's not actually causing any problems..DX just doesn't like to see it

..and about your black screen problem...did it start happening recently? after v1,2? are you using the PLAY BF2 ONLINE NOW icon?

        Please post your specs.

It just happened all of a sudden.. i dont know if its a conflict with something that could be running in the background or what.. i closed EVERYTHING and tried it but it still didnt work.

Ive got an MSI K8T-NeO MOBO
Geforce FX 5500 256mb Vid card
          1 gig ram
          AMD AthlonFX 64 2800+ chip
Hitachi 80 gig SATA hard drive
umm... what else.. BenQ 19" LCD monitor if that means anything...

I cant remember if it did it before i got the new video card, i had a Radeon 9250 before but it was 128mb so i got the geforce.. which is actually some EVGA piece of ****. When i installed it, AVI files stopped working, MPEG4 all that ****.. i go to open up a video in media player and it plays for one second and then all of a sudden its painted green and it locks up.. works in DivX player though, for whatever reason.

PS. BF2 is going to be the death of me.. never EVER have i had this many issues with a game

pps. I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, tried running without the patch, etc etc, you name it, ive tried it. The only thing i havent done is reinstall windows which i refuse to do cause its a pain in the ass and that wont fix it anyways

Did you use Driver Cleaner Pro after switching to the FX card? You should and remove any and all traces of other cards and driver versions.

            Get it from:

Re: Just discovered problem in DirectX diagnostic tool

Ok...that is pretty odd, because most game-related issues are solved by a complete manual uninstall followed by a clean install and minimal patching (i.e. latest patch only).

A lot of people have reported problems with lower end cards not working after v1.2 and that may simply be your problem.

To overcome this, somebody suggested forcing specific pixel shaders. An app such as PowerStrip or nVHardpage will do this for you. Another alternative mentioned was to use shaders from the demo version..but this is a lot more work.

Forcing your card to use a different pixel shader version should be what you try next.

well you could try a Windows reinstall . watch a movie or something while you're doing it... takes about 2 hours. Well, for me it did but I also have two hard drives so I had to format both.

i dont want to format, i have SOOO much **** on my computer.. that would mean backing everything up onto DVD and blah blah blah.. there has to be something that just.. isnt working with the game.. i should just buy an expensive video card and see if that fixes it

                              Download nVHardpage:
                              http://www.guru3d.com/nvhardpage/

Hit the 'DirectX' button and scroll down to the button. You'll see 2 sliders. Slide the Pixel Shader slider to various positions, hit the 'apply' checkbox below and try BF2. Try all Pixel Shader versions until you find one that works.
