I am feeling your pain. I have:
Athlon 1800
768 mg SDRAM
FX 5500 256

I know the memory is a problem and the processor. I can run everything on low and 800x600 and do ok. You get into a fire fight with more then 5 or 6 people then it really goes down hill. (any one say slide show) I find certain classes like AT are a little better for me because I look for armour and not a bunch of troops. My pain will end 2/28/06 that is the day my new XPS 600 comes. I was hesitant to get a new computer but my wife said get it you like to game and you deserve it. (got to love that lady) so my son gets the other system

maybe, i'm no good with ATI tweaking...what kind of processor do you have? P4 below 1.7 ghz and it lagss like a mofo

For me heat is not a problem cause with coolbits 1 and 2 it'll unlock a thingy that tells you your GPU heat, usually at 40*c and the core slowdown threhold level is like 135*C, i made it so it would beep if it gets too close to that, but it never has....and i have the fan always running (but its uber quite)

i know there is hope for Nvidiaer's all you need to do is download 77.6 nvidia drivers, or the omega ones (omega only goes up to 66.93, sadly), beyhond that driver, and you're pushing it on a lower end model for bf2.

it ran, but i'm sure you lagged at crucial times, like dancing with a bunch of enemys and arty coming down on ya, and explosions, and when a tank fires right next to ya...huh?

Yeah I do, but the problem is my card doesn't have 2.1 shader support. I dont think overclocking it will change anything.

You are right it will never work for Bf2 because of the lack of the right shader support. Overclocking it will do nothing to make it compatible.

you are wrong lonewolf, no amount of tweaking (short of softmod enabling shader 2.0/above) will make Fx 4 series work.

I don't know how a 32 meg card works though. I think the compatibility is based on the GPU chipset rather than RAM though but you won't get a 4 series card to run BF2.

You bought a Dell and you complain about money, unless you bought yours for $500 off techbargains or something. Even then, don't follow trends. From what I've seen, 90% of college students have f*ckin Dells. Build a PC for half the cost and buy a $400 Sempron notebook for chatting on whatever with whoever.

NVIDIA Geforce FX GO 5200 (32 MB!!!) tweaked to perfection with all the fix'ns at 245/490 MHZ
All settings on low (aa,af,dynamic lighting off) 1024 X 768 [NO VIDEO LAG!!!!]
80 GB Maxtor (5400 RPM)

How does it run in low-power mode (i.e. with CPU clocked down to <1GHz)? What does yours clock down to (my 2 GHz P-M clocks down to 600 MHz)? Some people report running on P3s < 1 GHz but with better video cards.

i dont think shader support matters, the 5200 only has 1.1 (i know cause i couldnt run chaos theory very well, or Silent Hill 4)

5200 actually supports PS2.0. Lack of the proper shader support would mean it wouldn't run at all, not just "not very well". That is why 5200 (and Radeon 8500) runs BF2 and GF4 doesn't even though GF4 is actually faster on games that it does run. (For more info on this do a google search on geforce 4600 bf2 shader or geforce4 bf2 shader.)

Maybe he wants to play BF2 on a portable machine. Not may $400 notebooks will do that. The 8600 was a very nice machine in it's day (which was several years ago). (FYI a Pentium M 1.6 GHz is equivalent to a 2.5 GHz P4 in performance.) Would be nice to upgrade the video though; it should take a Radeon 9600 128MB (see http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500video.htm).
