I attend alot of LAN parties and have been experiencing this CTD ever since I got the game. I'm running the following:

AMD Athlon 64 2800
1 GB partiot PC-3200 DDR
2 80 gig Western Digitals
GeForce 6600GT 128 meg
Sound Blaster Audigy Value

For me, the CTD's seem to only happen when I'm trying to join a server that's not a dedicated server (client hosted). Just like alot of you, as soon as the Join Game button appears, the whole screen flashes black and CTD's. The only work-around for that we've found is either you host the server, or connect to a dedicated server. Those were the only two options I have when I go to LANs. I don't experience the problem online.

Special Forces seems to randomly CTD in between map changes as well.

If anyone has a fix for this, please post it! It's a shame EA won't own up to their own mistakes in coding. Every time they're approached about it they blame it on the user's hardware.

CTD is part of the game. Not really hardware related. I think it has to do with the servers. I have had CTD on 3 different systems and all 3 did not have faulty hardware or software. Don't expect it to be fixed.

Don't expect it to be fixed? I hope so I have a 6800GT and after about 5-20 minutes of playing I crash to desktop. I get these weird black flashes sometimes to. This is a totally new rebuild I was fine until this 1.21 patch. I have done all sorts of tweaks and tried reinstalling drivers and everything else and still nothing helps. Has anyone had any luck with this issue?

All right guys...I talked with EA today as my system continually returned to the desktop after launching BF2 after installing any 1.2+ patch. They suggested I completely (I mean completely) uninstall BFS and clean the registry. I used UNINSTALLER (they have a trial version on their website good for 30 days...www.ursoftware.com). This cleaned my registry of BF2 data. I also went back and made sure all of my BF2 folders were erased and then rebooted my system.
I disabled my Norton Antivirus and Password Protector.
I then installed BF2 (did the reboot) and installed BF2 SF (I rebooted again).
Validated that BF2 worked (it did) and then installed the 1.22 Patch.
IT WORKS.

ok so we can safely say the reformat/ reinstall is NOT going to help I tried this as well.Ever since last patch i get these CTD and also cant find more than 15-20 SF servers! wtf is going on here?
