lag/ poor fps on dell xps laptop

I'm having major issues trying to play on a dell xps laptop. You know made for gaming. It meets nad surpasses all the requirements. Just trying to play in default video settings and it is unplayable. The opening video and everything else works like a charm. I have taken the video settings to low just to give it a try but was hoping someone here would know something that might help. I have yet to patch it from the base install.

    :hmm:

    Thanks for any help

Your laptop was probably overheating, CPUs are known to "downclock" before the thermalsensor thing kicks in.

Please post your exact specifications & I'm sure someone can help you.

We need stuff like CPU, RAM, Video Card bare minimum to get an idea of what you are working with.

Here are the specs from the Easy Info page.

Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
          System Memory 1024.2
          Processor Speed 3391.7
          DirectX Version 9.0c
Display Device ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9800
          Display Memory 256.0
          Display Driver 6.14.10.6561
          Sound Device SigmaTel Audio
          Sound Driver 5.10.3952

Don't have any other problems or lags. Recently rebuilt the OS so it is fresh and updated. The sound and video jump horribly.

Well I can not fix that part.. it is what it is at this point.

The video settings are default 800X600 for the game. They were running on medium quality and I have moved them to low. I changed the audio settings from software to hardware... but didn't see any changes there. Everything is default otherwise.

Oh God you and people who are going to say "Your problem is ATI their cards suck" just get the hell out of this thread.

Does your laptop ever feel insanely hot when you play or no?

No not hot.. don't think it is a under clocking issue due to thermal issues. I have a program that will give me temp info.. I'll take a look at that. I did a complete diagnostic on it yesterday and everything checked out fine.

Re: lag/ poor fps on dell xps laptop

Do you have problems in SP or just MP (to eliminate network as an issue)?
You definitely don't want hardware audio; integrated chipset isn't supported. Also make sure the EAX box is not checked.
Have you made sure nothing is running in the background? Windows checking for updates, anti-virus scans, instant messengers, etc? I have a step below your notebook (Inspiron 9200; Radeon 9700, Pentium M instead of P4) and it plays fine on low settings. Are you running Dell's video driver? I'm using ATI's (modified with Dhmodtool to install on notebook).

i am assuming you are using the 1.2 patch? if so that is probably the problem. my rig in sig runs like sh!t since 1.2 in mp, in single player it is fine. but who the hell wants to play sp?

running your rig @ 800x600, you machine should be able to handle it, as long as you don't have a ton of background items running.

i have a feeling this an ea issue. hell i can't even play on my own home lan with a dedicated machine right next to me. i will get a ping of 1, then it will jumpt up to 1000ms and numerous "your connection is having problems" or whatever that d@mn annoying warning is.

ea, fix the game you broke!!!!!

Reinstall BF2 and the patches. I had the same problem after the 1.2 patch, reinstalling it was the only way it was fixed.

I have an I9100 which is exactly the same as an xps, its defenetly not a heat issue if you look at the fans that laptop has.

If your still haveing problems reinstall the OS, that was the first thing i did when i got my 9100 because Dell just like most install a load of crap that you will never use along side it.

This is single player not network issues.

It is a fresh install of the OS that hasn't fixed anything.

No patches..base version from the CD installs.

I will try and change the Audio settings as recommended above.
